Between Lake Tegernsee and Wallberg
The Malerwinkel in Egern Bay inspired painters, poets and composers to create their works. The name thus represents a cultural aspect of the Lake Tegernsee landscape: you can also discover the area through its artistic history, rather than focusing your stay solely on activities in the mountains.
At over 1,700 metres high, Wallberg is the local mountain of Lake Tegernsee. It invites you to enjoy extended walks and challenging hikes. This opens up a range of ways to spend a day outdoors: those who enjoy covering longer distances on foot will find a starting point here, as will guests who want to include a challenging hike in their trip.
Wallberg is also a popular launch site for paragliders, who take advantage of the favourable wind conditions at Lake Tegernsee. The mountain is also home to Germany’s longest natural toboggan run, which is more than 6 km long. The Wallbergbahn takes visitors up Wallberg, where they can enjoy panoramic views over Lake Tegernsee and the Alps. Walking, hiking, paragliding, tobogganing and views of the mountains offer a range of different interests, without requiring the same day plan for every activity.
Swimming and discoveries with children
The Rottach-Egern lake and heated swimming pool has a large sports pool, a whirlpool and air-bubble loungers. There are also dedicated water and play facilities for children: the paddling pools have different water temperatures of up to 33°C and are connected by a water slide. There is also play equipment and a water bell. This may appeal to families who want to plan some time in the water alongside mountain excursions.
The Gsotthaber Hof Museum offers a different theme for exploring together. This family museum is all about horses; children can see, hear and feel. If you would like to include cultural experiences in your holiday, you can also visit the Holy Sepulchre at St. Laurentius Parish Church: over the course of Holy Week, changing Passion scenes are displayed there as life-size freestanding images.
Traditions and getting here
Recurring events in Rottach-Egern include the traditional Rosstag, held every year on the last Sunday in August. The Almabtrieb, or cattle drive from the alpine pastures, takes place every year in late autumn. The different dates may influence your choice of travel time if you would like to combine your stay with one of these local events.
There is also a specific transport change to bear in mind when planning your journey: since December 2023, Rottach-Egern has been part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). One ticket can be used on all participating transport operators.
