Gmund a.Tegernsee: Culture and active discoveries

Getting here and finding your way around

Gmund has its own railway station and can be reached from Munich every hour on the Bayerische Regiobahn. Since 10 December 2023, the town has been part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). This means you can use buses and trains in the district of Miesbach with a single ticket. If you are planning to travel by train, this connection is a practical factor to consider when choosing Gmund as your holiday destination. Two of the easy hiking trails also start at the station, so you can take their routes and starting points into account when planning your trip.

Local history museum, literature and cultural events

Gmund’s local history museum is housed in the Jagerhaus. The building was constructed in 1793 as a butcher’s house and became the residence of royal gamekeeper Johann Mayer in 1815. The exhibitions focus on the Mangfall, Max Obermayr and traditional costumes in their various forms. The museum brings together local history and a range of regional subjects under one roof.

Gmund’s regular cultural programme includes the GmundArt exhibitions and “Musi am See.” For a literary walk, there is the family-friendly LiteraTour #10 “Gmunder Originale”: this easy route has eight stops and starts at Gmund railway station. If you enjoy combining cultural discoveries with exercise, you can include this tour in your travel plans. Public tours of Gmund Papier offer another perspective on a local business. Visitors get a behind-the-scenes look at paper production; tours take place at 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Friday of each month.

Hiking and cycling routes

For an easy, family-friendly circular hike, the Großer Rundwanderweg Gmund starts at the railway station and is 12.7 kilometres long. The Tegernseer Höhenweg “Mit der Bahn in die Berge” also starts at the station: it is 5.8 kilometres long and described as an easy, family-friendly route. If you are looking for a longer, moderately difficult hike, “Neureuth von Gmund” is a family-friendly circular route covering 10.4 kilometres; it starts at Gmund Gasse. The distances and difficulty ratings provide a practical basis for comparing different hiking plans.

Gmund is also connected to several cycling routes. The Bodensee-Königssee and Munich-Venice long-distance cycle routes pass through the town. The Gmund/Tegernsee to Sterzing Alpine crossing starts here. Another option is the 20-kilometre Tegernsee lake circuit, an easy, family-friendly cycling tour that passes through Gmund. The M-Wasserweg runs for 82 kilometres from Munich to Gmund. These cycling connections range from a family-friendly ride through the town to routes with more distant starting points or destinations.

Activities at Oedberg

At Oedberg in Gmund, you’ll find the Tegernsee high ropes course, which is integrated into the existing mountain forest. Its seven courses include a total of 78 obstacles, as well as a 130-metre-long flying fox. Children up to the age of seven can try the children’s courses “Fuchsbau” and “Bärenhöhle”; from the age of eight, they can move on to the higher courses. The age guidelines help families choose suitable activities for their children.

Other activities at Oedberg include a winding, approximately 200-metre-long tubing track with a rope lift and a summer toboggan run. Visitors can ride downhill on the track and use the rope lift to get back to the top. The summer toboggan run is 1.4 kilometres long and winds through woodland and meadows; it is considered an adventure for all ages. The high ropes course, tubing track and toboggan run offer different ways to enjoy active time at Oedberg, while the hiking and cycling routes provide further options for planning your day.
