Discover Schliersee: Lakeside Trail, Traditional Crafts and Church Art
Accommodation in Schliersee
Schliersee combines a lakeside walk with a history of traditional crafts and sacred art: the approximately 7 km lakeside trail is mostly flat, while the open-air museum, local history museum and St. Sixtus offer different ways to explore the past. Explore Schliersee on foot
The circular trail around Schliersee is approximately 7 km long and mostly flat. Along the route, you’ll find benches, lakeside viewpoints and bathing coves. A tree discovery trail is also part of the official lakeside route. The trail is mostly paved and easy to navigate; a companion is recommended because of a few short uphill sections.
The Vitalwelt in Schliersee is one possible starting point for the circular trail. The adjacent Kurpark lets you choose which direction to walk. This makes it easy to plan the route around the lake as one continuous outing, with benches and viewpoints along the way inviting you to take a break.
The Lauber boat rental next to the Vitalwelt offers rowing boats, pedal boats, electric boats and slide boats. As operations depend on the weather, check the current offerings before your visit. The Schliersee III motor vessel operates on Schliersee from May to September; check current service information before your trip.
Traditional crafts and history in Schliersee
The Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum is designed as an Upper Bavarian farm village, with historic buildings faithfully reconstructed in detail. It showcases traditional crafts such as shoemaking and blacksmithing, as well as beer brewing based on historical methods. Demonstrations may vary depending on the date. This makes a visit interesting not only for those who enjoy historic buildings, but also for anyone curious about the techniques behind them.
The Schliersee Local History Museum has been housed in the Schredl House since 1916; the building dates back to the 14th century. St. Sixtus Church was built between 1712 and 1715 on the site of a medieval predecessor church. Johann Baptist Zimmermann created the ceiling frescoes and stucco work there. The church also contains a Throne of Mercy by Erasmus Grasser, dating from 1490. The different traces of history—from the medieval predecessor church to the 18th-century works and the 1490 artwork—give a visit a distinctive historical focus.
An event around the turn of the year is also part of local cultural life: every year on December 31, the Schliersee Local History Society invites visitors to a year-end gathering at the Schliersee Local History Museum.
More hikes and excursions
The Josefsthal Waterfalls are nearby, on the southern side of Schliersee in the Neuhaus district. The hike there is considered moderately difficult, is approximately 2.8 km long and takes around 1.5 hours. Treat this as an estimate, as trail conditions may vary.
The Schliersee Church Trio is a two-hour hike from church to church, linking Christuskirche, St. Sixtus and St. Georg. Tour dates are scheduled for the period from February 19, 2026, to February 11, 2027; check the current schedule before your trip. Alongside the lakeside trail, this hike offers a different focus: here, the churches take center stage instead of the shore and viewpoints.
