In the wider Straubing-Bogen destination, Bogenberg brings together pilgrimage history and museum exhibits. It is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The annual Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church at Pentecost. The Bogenberg District Museum covers the history of the Bavarian lozenges: from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian state coat of arms, to their status as a symbol of Bavaria. It also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimages.

Bayerwald Xperium is another destination in the Straubing-Bogen area. At more than 100 experiment stations, visitors can explore natural phenomena and science through hands-on activities. Windberg offers a different focus: the medieval village sits on a scenic hilltop at an altitude of 420 m and offers panoramic views of the Bavarian Forest mountains, the Bogenbach Valley and the Danube Plain. Its medieval monastic complex—with basilica, prelature, court office and craftsmen’s house—has largely been preserved.

In Wiesenfelden, two circular routes offer different points of reference for planning. The Kobelberg Nature Experience Trail is about 4.5 km long, has nine stations, is suitable for pushchairs and is also cleared in winter. The accessible circular route around Beckenweiher is 2.3 km long and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Its five information points, with benches and information boards, cover the local flora and fauna, the pond’s protected status and its history; the trail also crosses a 110 m-long nature observation boardwalk.

For an active day, Bogen in the Straubing-Bogen destination offers the “Culture Tour”, the “Beer Garden Tour” and the “Left and Right of the Danube” tour. All three are designated as day trips for families with children. The European pilgrimage route VIA NOVA is signposted as a hiking trail over a total length of around 300 km and passes through Bogen. The region therefore offers both shorter circular routes with specific stops and cycling and hiking options with a different focus.
