Cycling, Hiking and Water
The Main Cycle Route is a practical starting point for a cycling trip. Hallstadt is also home to St. John’s Church, a cycling-friendly church: it is specially open to cyclists and offers a place to rest and reflect quietly during a bike tour. If you are interested in longer walks, the Seven Rivers Hiking Trail runs through Hallstadt and Dörfleins on both sides of the Main. The Upper Main Canoe Trail runs from Hausen to Hallstadt, adding a water-based route to the options.
Another way to get active is the Hallstadt Nature Adventure Trail. The circular route begins at the hiking car park in Dörfleins. For families looking to include a range of activities in their trip, Hallstadt outdoor swimming pool is another practical option: it has four heated pools, its own playground and a beach volleyball court. These activities offer different ways to spend your time—from a circular walk or bike ride to a day at the pool.
Church Fairs, Markets and a Festival in Dörfleins
Four Hallstadt church fairs are recurring events throughout the year; they take place in the summer months. Markets are held around the market square three times a year. In Hallstadt’s district of Dörfleins, the Weiherfest takes place annually on the first weekend in July. If you enjoy combining your stay with a festival or market visit, you can take these different events into account when planning your trip.
Churches, Art and Remarkable Wayside Shrines
The town’s architectural and artistic history also offers several different discoveries. St. Anne’s Chapel was built from sandstone in the Baroque style in 1703. St. Kilian is a late Gothic, three-aisled hall church. Its church treasury includes a silver thurible dating from 1747. In Hallstadt, you can therefore encounter both a Baroque sandstone chapel and a late Gothic hall church.
In Dörfleins, the Temple on Kreuzberg features a Calvary group erected in the mid-19th century and wayside shrines installed in 1890 with the Stations of the Cross. Also in Dörfleins is the Hagelmarter, a landmark of the district and the largest and most significant wayside shrine in the Bamberg area. It is over 5.50 metres high and over 1 metre wide. The Kulturboden Hallstadt also offers concerts, cabaret and variety performances. Art lovers can find another option at the Hallstadt Artothek, located in the St. Kilian town library. Some of the artworks are also in the town hall, where they can be viewed, borrowed or purchased during regular opening hours.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
Hallstadt and Dörfleins are served daily by Bamberg municipal utility bus route 904, which connects them with the Bamberg urban area. Hallstadt is also directly connected to the rail network on the Ebermannstadt–Forchheim–Bamberg–Lichtenfels or Ebern route.
