Ergersheim lies between the northern foothills of the Steigerwald and the southern foothills of the Frankenhöhe. At the same time, the village is a wine-growing community in Franconia’s “Mehrregion” and lies directly on the Middle Franconian Bocksbeutel Route. Its landscape and wine therefore shape two distinct aspects of the village. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can consider whether hiking and cycling opportunities or the historic sites in the municipality should take priority in your plans.

Juniper Heathland, Mixed Forest and Trails

The juniper heathland and mixed forest, managed using traditional coppicing methods, offer hiking opportunities with an unspoilt character. Cycling and hiking are also among the leisure activities in Ergersheim and the surrounding area. Protected landscapes are spread across the municipality: three nature reserves cover a total of about 400 hectares. One is in Ergersheim, and two more are in the district of Seenheim. This distribution is useful to know if you are interested not only in the village centre but also in the municipality’s landscape.

The 135-kilometre Aischtal Cycle Path is another cycling option in and around Ergersheim. The European Watershed Trail is also suitable for hiking and cycling. The 97-kilometre route runs from Ansbach to Schnelldorf along the European watershed on the heights of Frankenhöhe Nature Park. When planning your holiday, you can therefore choose between the landscapes described locally and the longer route options.

Ermetzhofen: Cemetery and Mill History

The history of the municipality can also be explored at several sites. In the district of Ermetzhofen, the Jewish cemetery preserves a Tahara house and around 400 gravestones dating from 1791 to 1936. It served as a district cemetery for the Jewish communities of Burgbernheim, Ermetzhofen, Gnodstadt, Uffenheim and Welbhausen. This historic role connects the cemetery with several communities in the region. Its entrance is on Bergtshofener Straße and can be reached via a field path.

Ermetzhofen is also home to the Obermühle and Kellermühle mills. The Obermühle was first mentioned in a document in 1277, and the Kellermühle in 1352. The two dates are 75 years apart, showing that the surviving references to the mills come from different centuries. Together with the cemetery, they give the district its own distinct historical focus within the municipality.

Wine Village and Regional Culture

The range at the Hofmann winery in Ergersheim includes wine and Secco, grape juice and spirits. Product availability may vary by season.

The wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim also offers distinct cultural attractions in other places. In Bad Windsheim, a tour of the Franconian Open-Air Museum is described as a journey through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. One notable building there is the Bauhofstadel: built between 1441 and 1444, its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of about 360 square metres without supporting columns. This regional option may complement your interests; it should be distinguished from what Ergersheim itself offers.
