Discover Uehlfeld: Half-timbered houses, the Weisach and nature
Accommodation in Uehlfeld
Uehlfeld combines distinctive architectural heritage with nature trails and cycle paths in the surrounding area. The Lower Gatehouse, the old tower of St. James’s Church and the landscape along the Weisach each offer a different perspective. Which of these you want to shape your stay may also influence your choice of holiday apartment: are historic buildings, riverside paths or longer cycling tours your main focus?
Architectural heritage by the market square and church
The Lower Gatehouse was built in 1787 as a half-timbered building with a curved mansard roof. It once marked the eastern end of the market square; the B 470 federal highway runs through one side of the building. This brings the building’s former role at the market square and today’s road layout together in one place.
The Protestant parish church of St. James also tells the story of several building phases. Its oldest part is the solid tower, whose lower section dates from around 1400. In the 17th century, the tower was given a new, slate-covered Welsche hood. A trumpet-blowing angel serves as its weather vane. Architecture enthusiasts will find two very different historic details here: the gatehouse’s half-timbering and mansard roof, and the church’s striking tower structure.
Paths, water and nature in the municipality
Near Uehlfeld, the five-stop Weisach Nature and Adventure Trail follows the River Weisach. The Weisach flows directly into the Aisch. Along the way, topics include geology and soil conditions, native animals and their habitats, as well as the allotment gardens by the Weisach. The stops give the route a range of themes; its location near Uehlfeld is also worth bearing in mind when planning.
The area between Rohensaas and Gottesgab, within the municipality of Uehlfeld, is particularly well suited to birdwatching. The ponds near Egelsbach in Tragelhöchstädt are also worth a visit. Swimming is permitted in the Weisachsee in Schornweisach. If you are planning to swim, check local conditions in advance.
Cycle routes with different points of interest
The Aischtal Cycle Route links Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Bamberg; Gerhardshofen and Uehlfeld lie along the route. This makes Uehlfeld part of a connection with endpoints far apart. The Carp Circular Route offers a different perspective: it passes various locations in the administrative community and includes a western and an eastern route. The two routes therefore differ in their stated focus: the Aischtal Cycle Route connects two cities, while the Carp Circular Route offers two routes associated with the administrative community. Routes may change; check current information before setting out.
The wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim also offers further ideas for planning your trip. The almost 100-kilometre-long long-distance cycle route “from the Main to the Zenn” crosses the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is particularly well suited to exploring on foot or by bike. These regional opportunities offer a broader perspective on the destination and should not be confused with the routes immediately around Uehlfeld.
Culture and Franconian specialities across the wider destination
In Bad Windsheim, the Franconian Open-Air Museum invites visitors to explore 700 years of everyday Franconian history. The Bauhofstadel, built in 1441–1444, is also located there. Its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square metres without supporting pillars. In Neustadt an der Aisch, the Aischgrund Carp Museum explores the more than 1,250-year-old tradition of carp farming across ten rooms.
A regional favourite is Aischgrund mirror carp, served in Neustadt an der Aisch from September to April, including crispy fried or cooked in a seasoned broth. Each year from 1 September to 1 November, selected restaurants across the district take part in the Aischgrund Carp Connoisseur Weeks. The Game Weeks take place every November and offer venison prepared in a variety of ways; check the current programme or participating restaurants before your visit.
You can tailor your stay to your own interests: Uehlfeld offers architectural heritage, nature and walking and cycling routes, while the wider destination adds further museums and culinary experiences.
