Main-Spessart: Discover forests, the Main and culture

Vineyards, water and forests give Main-Spessart its varied character. There are also hiking and cycling trails, rivers and towns with a rich history. Hiking and cycling across a range of stages

The Main hiking trail is around 500 kilometres long, with almost 100 kilometres of it running through the district of Main-Spessart. On this section, it connects Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. The Spessart trails carry the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal. In the Spessart Nature Park, options range from short walks to hikes lasting several days. There are also various ways to explore by bike: the network of cycling trails is shaped by long-distance cycle routes in Lower Franconia through the Main and Wern valleys and along the Sinn and Franconian Saale rivers. The Main Cycle Route, the Saale Cycle Route and the Sinn Cycle Route pass through Gemünden a.Main. The area around Gemünden offers numerous mountain biking routes through the Spessart forest. In Frammersbach, the Bikewald Spessart has seven signposted routes. This selection gives you several options if staying active is an important part of your trip.

Historic towns and a vibrant history of craftsmanship

Karlstadt combines a history dating back to the Middle Ages with a clearly defined old town enclosed by walls, towers and gates. Its buildings and structures have been preserved for more than seven centuries; the town was founded around 1200. If you are interested in regional history as well as the landscape, archaeological cultural trails offer further points of interest. They wind through the Spessart countryside and provide insight into the region’s history.

In Aschfeld, a district of Eußenheim, you’ll find a restored fortified church with a local history museum. The Historic Fortified Church of Aschfeld is a 15th-century refuge and defensive stronghold. Parts of the fortifications are now used as museum rooms. The collection “The Good Old Days, Up Close” displays historic defensive weapons as well as rural life and work. The Paper Mill Museum in Homburg offers a different perspective on craftsmanship: production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the paper-making family’s living quarters and a demonstration workshop have been preserved there. A hand-papermaking workshop in its fifth generation still produces fine mould-made paper today.

Other cultural destinations each have their own focus. The Spessart Museum presents the region’s history, looking beyond romantic clichés about the Spessart forest. In Marktheidenfeld, the Franck-Haus is a Baroque town house with two exhibition areas and a magnificent ballroom featuring wall hangings and a ceiling painting. In Gemünden a.Main, sights include the ruins of Scherenburg Castle and Huttenschloss, which houses the Spessart Nature Park Documentation Centre and the Film-Photo-Sound Museum.

Rivers, seasons and practical information

Around Gemünden a.Main, paddlers and canoeists mainly use the Saale and Sinn rivers. If you would rather plan your trip around activities on the water, this regional focus is a useful guide. For a different way to explore, two circular routes on the European Cultural Trail pass through Triefenstein and provide information about nature and culture. Rothenfels is a starting point for shorter and longer walks and bike rides.

One seasonal difference comes in winter: when there is snow, cross-country ski trails are available in Frammersbach, around the Bayerische Schanz near Ruppertshütten and on the Frankenlandloipe near Waldzell. In Homburg, the wine festival takes place on the last weekend in July and the first weekend in August. If you are travelling by train, you can use Lohr a.Main station; trains from the direction of Aschaffenburg or Würzburg run hourly.
