The Marienkapelle (Chapel of St Mary) in the centre of the old town was built in 1649, during the plague years following the end of the Thirty Years’ War. The Alte Tor (Old Gate) stands on the southeastern edge of the former castle grounds in western Pentling. It is designed as a round-arched passageway with a pedestrian entrance and decorative crenellations, and forms part of a courtyard wall dating from the 16th century. The Catholic branch church of St John the Baptist is known as the Papal Church. Josef Ratzinger served there as a pastor from 1969 to 2005, until his election as Pope Benedict XVI. A different focus awaits you at the nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent. A Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian artworks bring culture and nature together there. The grounds include a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. The park gardens and their varied planting offer a distinct experience alongside the Neoclassical architecture of the Walhalla.

For another way to explore actively, the signposted Fruit Experience Trail covers about 34 kilometres from Hemau via Beratzhausen to Kallmünz. There are twelve large information boards along the cycling route. The approximate distance and number of boards give this outing a different character from a visit to a single building or park.
