Schlatzendorf: Discover village life and nature
Accommodation in Schlatzendorf
Schlatzendorf combines village traditions, regular exercise and seasonal nature watching with a range of accommodation options. When planning your trip, the different rhythms are particularly worth considering: some events return every year, others every two years; the running group meets on a set day of the week, and the storks are part of the seasonal side of the village. You can decide whether to plan your stay around an event date, outdoor exercise or accommodation by the Schwarzer Regen.
Village life with events on different schedules
A notable date in the village calendar is the raising of the maypole on 30 April. It takes place every year at Gasthaus Sonnenblick, organised by the Schlatzendorf Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Christmas market is also one of the village community’s annual traditional events. The children’s play day at the Mitterweg playground, however, follows a different schedule: the village community holds it every two years. If a particular event is important for your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.
Since 2016, the Schlatzendorf village community has held a village championship in Preisschafkopfen at Gasthaus Sonnenblick; since 2023, it has been an open championship. This means the calendar includes different events at the same venue: the maypole raising on a fixed date, and the championship, whose current date should be checked. The mix of annual and biennial events makes the calendar particularly relevant when planning a trip.
Nature watching and outdoor exercise
A stork’s nest is located on the chimney of the Old Brickworks in the Schlatzendorf district. On 1 July 2025, a report documented three young storks there. The nest offers a seasonal nature-watching opportunity, distinct from events scheduled for set dates.
Outdoor exercise also has its place in the weekly rhythm: in the Schlatzendorf Forest, the WSV Viechtach running group meets on Mondays from April to October at 6:30 pm. If you would like to include it in your trip plans, it is advisable to check the current schedule. Its fixed day of the week sets the running group apart from both individual event dates and the seasonal chance to watch the storks at their nest.
Accommodation by the Schwarzer Regen
The district’s tourism offering includes holiday apartments, the Schwarzholz holiday village and Adventure Camp Schnitzmühle, with an attractive campsite right by the Schwarzer Regen. At Adventure Camp, guests can also stay in accommodation directly by the river. This includes a lodge with a larch-wood walkway and a view of the starry sky. Its waterside location is therefore a specific point of reference for travellers who would like to take this into account when choosing accommodation.
The accommodation options mentioned offer different starting points for planning: you can begin by looking for a holiday apartment, or also explore the holiday village and the camp. If you are mainly interested in community events, their calendar may determine when you travel; for a stay focused on nature watching or the running group, their seasonal or weekly schedules come into play.
More to explore in the wider destination of Viechtach
The wider destination of Viechtach adds historical architecture, collections and environmental education as topics in their own right. The parish church of St. Augustine in Viechtach features Rococo decorations, including stucco work on the ceilings and walls, rose garlands and rocaille ornamentation. Viechtach’s Old Town Hall dates back to 1542; the second floor houses a permanent exhibition about the Großer Pfahl nature reserve.
Viechtach Local History Museum focuses on three topics: Viechtach in old views, images and symbols of popular devotion, and linen processing in earlier times. The Viechtach Environmental Education Centre aims to provide environmental education for all age groups. For cyclists, the 162-kilometre Regental Cycle Route passes directly through Viechtach; it runs between Regensburg and Bayerisch Eisenstein. In contrast to Schlatzendorf’s village traditions and seasonal nature watching, these topics offer their own focus on local history, environmental education and a long-distance cycling route.
