Hammer mill, tools and carriages
The Hammer Mill Museum houses a faithfully reconstructed hammer mill. Three heavy tail hammers are powered by a waterwheel via a large shaft. Historic tools are also on display in the museum. The white hammer or weapons smithy can be traced back to 1806 through the village chronicle—a specific point of reference for anyone interested in the history of local smithing.
The Carriage Museum offers a different insight into the history of everyday life and transport. It displays more than 30 historic carriages and sleighs. This collection is more than just a series of different vehicle types: the historic carriages and sleighs are still harnessed on various occasions.
Local history and the Schönach
St Stephen’s Parish Church is also part of Schwabsoien’s history. The present-day church was consecrated on 5 August 1827. It was preceded by the village fire of 6 September 1823, which destroyed the previous church.
The Schönach flows through Schwabsoien, Schwabbruck, Altenstadt, Schwabniederhofen and Hohenfurch before flowing into the Lech. Its source area lies west of Schwabsoien. There are seven springs there, from which around 350 to 400 litres of water per second emerge at a constant temperature of 8°C. Another trace of earlier activity can be found in the forest and in fields near the forest edge around Schwabsoien: coal beds up to 15 metres across remain from the area’s former charcoal production.
Mill trail and cycling route
The Soier Mill Trail is an adventure trail that combines culture and nature. If you are interested in the trail and the museums, groups can take part in guided tours of the Mill Trail and the museums throughout the year, provided they register with the municipality in advance. Registration is part of planning these tours.
For cyclists, the nearly 125-kilometre auerbergland@venture route connects the Hammer Mill Museum and the Mill Trail in Schwabsoien with, among other things, other museums, religious buildings and adventure trails in the region. It is a cycling loop through the Auerbergland, giving it a different geographical focus from a stay centred mainly on attractions in the village. You can take the stated distance into account when deciding how important to make the loop in your travel plans.
