Hohenfurch: Rococo, Frescoes and Trails

Sacred Art in the Parish Church

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary took on its present form in the first half of the 18th century in the Rococo style. Its furnishings reveal different periods and craft techniques: a stucco pulpit sits alongside a Gothic Madonna dating from 1420. The ceiling fresco in the nave depicts the Assumption of Mary. The frescoes were painted by Johannes Hehl of Göggingen, and the stucco work was created by Josef Fischer of Faulenbach; the Stations of the Cross are also frescoes by Hehl. Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Historical Traces

The Lech Höhenweg is the best-known of Hohenfurch’s well-maintained, marked hiking trails. The Lech Cycle Path runs through the town along the Schönau in the direction of Schwabniederhofen. An extension of the Lech Cycle Path also starts in Hohenfurch, leading through lush greenery to the Winkel Chapel south of Kinsau.

A variant of the auerbergland@ventureroute starts on the western edge of the municipality, runs via Höhenberg and the Pfaffental valley to Kinsau on the Lech, and returns to Hohenfurch along the long-distance cycle route beside the Via Claudia Augusta. It is part of the marked cycling network. The routes offer different directions: the path along the Schönau points towards Schwabniederhofen, the extension leads to the Winkel Chapel, and the variant through several named places returns to Hohenfurch. This gives you the choice of a destination or a loop when planning your trip.

History is also part of the local discoveries: sections of the Roman Imperial Road, part of the Augsburg–Füssen route, have been preserved in Hohenfurch.

A Resting Place and Place of Prayer in the Hermitage

The hermitage is located beneath the tower of the Kalkbrenner Chapel. It offers visitors a place to rest and serves as a private space for prayer. From the seat, there is a direct view of the Mother of God. South of Hohenfurch, St. Ursula’s Chapel stands on a green hill. The two places offer different points of interest: one provides a place to sit and pray, while the other is a chapel in a prominent spot in the landscape.

The Penzberg Mining Museum and the Raisting Radome offer different points of interest: the museum preserves the memory of bituminous coal mining from 1796 to 1966 and offers multilingual tours for international visitors, families and school groups. The Raisting Radome is Germany’s first commercially operated satellite ground station.
