Renaissance Architecture and History

In the wider Neuburg-Schrobenhausen travel destination, Neuburg Residence Palace represents the Early Renaissance: Count Palatine Ottheinrich had this important complex built between 1530 and 1545. The palace is joined by the Palace Chapel, one of the oldest Protestant church buildings in the world. Hans Bocksberger created its frescoes in 1543. The construction period, religious history and paintings give the palace complex several distinct cultural and historical facets. Grünau Hunting Lodge is also a fine example of the Early Renaissance. An impressive avenue of old lime trees leads up to a viewpoint overlooking the Danube and the surrounding floodplains. Antoniberg is also home to the “Durchblick” installation, built in 2015. It shows the exact location of the 500-metre-long Danube bridge built by the Romans, evidence of which lies in the riverbed. At this site, nature conservation, scenic views and Roman history come together—three different starting points for an outing focused on culture or natural history.
