The Battle of Hohenlinden in the Town and at the Museum

On December 3, 1800, the Battle of Hohenlinden took place in Hohenlinden. General Moreau commanded the French forces; the allied Bavarian and Austrian troops were under the command of Archduke John. The “Battle of Hohenlinden” museum is dedicated to this event. It is located in the basement of the primary school and is spread over two rooms.

In the museum, 7,500 tin soldiers in period uniforms, with period equipment and weapons, depict the armies’ positions in the early afternoon of December 3, 1800. Books, engravings, rifles, sabers, helmets, bullets and horseshoes supplement the exhibition. Among the outstanding items on loan is a votive panel commemorating the engagement of the farmer Stephan Rumpfinger to the Virgin Mary. You can also learn about the Treaties of Lunéville, select topics using a multimedia system, and follow the battle as a strategy game.

Church Architecture and Distinctive Landmarks

The Old Church of the Visitation of Mary is considered an outstanding building of Ebersberg Abbey. Its wall piers support a Gothic net vault. Two keystones are carved with the Visitation of Mary and the Massacre of the Innocents. The architecture thus connects the church interior with two specific scenes that you can spot by looking up.

Another landmark in the town’s history is the “Maria im Felde” chapel. It was consecrated on June 16, 2002, between Hohenlinden and Preisendorf, near the district boundary, on Hohenlinden territory. The tower of St. Joseph’s Church is also a distinctive landmark: It is 70 meters high in total and visible as a pointed spire from every point on the Hohenlinden gravel plain.

Forest Landscapes, Cycling Routes and a Circular Trail

The municipal area is almost completely surrounded by Ebersberger Forst, Großhaager Forst, Mittbacher Au and Lindacher Wald. The forest belt opens only to the northeast. Various cycling and hiking routes pass through Hohenlinden and its surroundings. One specific option is the approximately 52-kilometer circular route of the “Battle of Hohenlinden” cycling tour. Traveling clockwise, it takes you to 17 destinations around Hohenlinden, described as the main battle sites. Benches are available at the destinations and along the way. Nearby, the Hohenlinder Sauschütt is located in Ebersberger Forst. It has three wildlife enclosures with red deer, fallow deer and wild boar; visitors can often see the animals at close range in their natural habitat. A 3.2-kilometer accessible forest educational trail also runs in a loop right next to the Sauschütt. About two hours are suggested for exploring it.
