On the Way to the Leiblach

The “Leiblach Crossing” hike leads from the parish village of Sigmarszell down to the Leiblach along the Leiblach Valley Hiking Trail. The return to Sigmarszell-Kirchdorf follows meadow paths with expansive views. The Zellersteg footbridge, used to reach the village, was rebuilt in 2004; a short uphill stretch follows. Overall, this family-friendly short hike runs mainly along forest paths and meadow trails. The combination of woodland, meadows and the path down to the Leiblach makes the route an appealing choice for a day out hiking together. For families, its classification as a short hike is also a helpful point of reference when planning the day.

The two other trails mentioned have different emphases: the Leiblach Valley Hiking Trail names the valley in its route, while the Way of St James highlights its pilgrimage connection. More Places to Explore in the Wider Lindau Destination

In the Eistobel Nature Reserve, the water of the Upper Argen plunges down the valley over several waterfalls; a three-kilometre hiking trail runs alongside them. A visitor pavilion provides information before guests descend into the gorge. The Rohrach Gorge offers a different kind of natural scenery: as the largest nature reserve in the district of Lindau, it provides habitats for rare animals and plants, including wet and nutrient-poor meadows, springs, and rocky and open-land areas. If you would rather learn about different types of forest at information stops, the Plenterwald Trail runs between the Kurhaus Scheidegg and a point shortly before the entrance to the Waldwelt Skywalk Allgäu. The wider Lindau destination also offers cultural attractions, from buildings to themed trails. On Lindau Island, the New Lighthouse is 33 metres high and accessible via 139 steps. Built in 1380, the Thieves’ Tower long marked the western end of the town fortifications. In Gestratz, the 250-year-old local heritage house, housed in a converted smithy with a working forge and exhibition room, offers a glimpse into living history. In Maierhöfen, the approximately five-kilometre Sculpture Trail is a circular route featuring 17 sculptures and twelve text panels. Artists created the works at a symposium and permanently donated them to Maierhöfen for display. These examples are in other places within the wider Lindau destination, not in Sigmarszell itself.

For winter outings, Gestratz has a total of eight kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails; conditions can vary from one winter to the next. In the wider Lindau destination, Nonnenhorn also offers convenient options for travelling by train and boat: the village has a centrally located railway station, and boat connections from the landing stage serve Lindau, Bregenz, Meersburg, Konstanz and Mainau Island. As timetables are seasonal and may change, it is advisable to check connections before travelling.
