Church, Pilgrimage and Local History

The Catholic parish church of St. Urban and St. Silvester is at the heart of the area’s cultural history. The listed building preserves architectural elements from different periods: The lower section of the tower probably dates from the 14th or 15th century, while the chancel and west wall of the nave date from the end of the 15th century. In 1690, the church was extended and the Joseph Chapel was added.

The church originated from an old Premonstratensian monastery and was probably built before 1400. A miraculous image in the side altar probably dates from around 1420 and attracted numerous pilgrims. The plague cemetery on the present-day road from Unterreitnau to Bechtersweiler also recalls a momentous period. It was established during the plague epidemics of the Thirty Years’ War from 1618 to 1648, after 341 people had died in Unterreitnau and not all of them could be buried in the cemetery at the parish church. The small Michaelskapelle on Taubenberg has also been ecclesiastically part of Unterreitnau since 1831. King Ludwig I approved its ecclesiastical separation from Wasserburg on 9 July 1831, after Bruggach and Taubenberg had requested this in 1830.

Hiking and Cycling with Different Focal Points

The guided “Panoramic Views” hike begins in Unterreitnau and visits the formerly important Baroque Church of the Pilgrimage of Mary there. It then follows the legendary Unterreitnau Moor through Bruggach to Taubenberg. For cyclists, the panoramic cycling loop around Lake Constance near Lindau offers a different perspective.
