Aeschach: Roman Traces, Gardens and Paths
Accommodation in Aeschach
Roman traces, historic gardens and paths along the Ach give Aeschach a distinctive character. At Römerpark, you can see remnants of a large Roman villa; at the Old Aeschach Cemetery, terracotta fragments remain visible in the chapel’s masonry. Other highlights include an Alpine botanical garden founded in 1886, Holdereggen Park and a hike into the open countryside. For planning your trip, this offers a choice between local history, landscaped gardens and outdoor activity.
Roman Traces and Local History
Around 200 AD, a large Roman villa was built in the area of what is now the Aeschach district. Its remains can be seen at Römerpark. The wall and chapel of the Old Aeschach Cemetery also incorporate remains of a Roman villa; terracotta fragments are still visible in the chapel’s masonry.
The cemetery’s history dates back to a later period. During earlier epidemics, Lindau’s cemetery was moved from the island to the mainland in Aeschach. The cemetery, which was new at the time and is now known as the Old Aeschach Cemetery, was consecrated in 1512. The listed Klostermühle is considered the last reminder of the area’s former importance to the city and its surroundings. Known as the “Zum Engel” country estate, the property now called Villa Engel was already well known in the then-independent municipality of Aeschach in the early 17th century.
Gardens Between Plant Diversity and Park Paths
The Alpine botanical garden on the Aeschach shore is a specialist nursery for alpine and rock garden plants, founded in 1886. It includes around 2,000 varieties as well as rarities from five continents. If you are interested in plants, its appeal lies in the combination of a clear specialisation and a wide variety of species.
At Haus zum Nussbaum in Lindau’s Aeschach district, garden designer Wolfgang Seethaler has created both romantic country-style and modern garden landscapes. A guided visit to this garden is possible only by appointment and advance booking; arrange both before your visit. Holdereggen Park, with its historic villa estate, has winding paths and small quiet areas.
Mini Golf or a Hike Along the Ach
There are various activities to choose from for a more active stay. The mini golf course on the Aeschach shore covers more than 1,000 square metres and offers 17 varied holes. Course details may change; if you plan to play mini golf, check the latest information before your visit. Between Reutin and Aeschach, the Ach forms a natural boundary. A hike along the river leads into the open countryside, with its orchards. This gives you the choice between a round on 17 holes and a hike along the river.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Aeschach, it is worth first deciding what kind of stay you want. History and gardens offer a different experience from mini golf or a hike along the Ach; make your choice based on the activities you actually plan to enjoy.
