Hochstadt a.Main lies on the Main, at the geographical centre of the Lichtenfels district and in the Gottesgarten am Obermain. The Main floodplains around the town offer excellent opportunities for leisure and relaxation; nature and bird sanctuaries surround the entire town. This gives the landscape two defining features: the Main floodplains as a place for recreation and the protected areas as a distinctive setting. The town’s history also includes Langheim Cistercian Abbey, which played a role in both early ecclesiastical history and architectural history.

Monastic history and church art

The former Cistercian administrative building is considered Hochstadt’s most distinctive landmark. Today, the building houses a district clinic and therapy centre; it is used as an inpatient rehabilitation clinic for people with dependencies on drugs, medication and alcohol. Here, the history of the monastery meets a building with a present-day medical function.

The first chapel in Hochstadt was built by Langheim Cistercian Abbey in the 14th century and dedicated to Mary. The high altar painting in the Church of the Assumption of Mary also points to a specific model: it is a reproduction of the Byzantine devotional image Sancta Maria Nive Candidior, located in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The local church connection thus stretches from the early chapel to a named depiction from Rome; these two details tell different chapters of the town’s sacred history.

Main floodplains and Franconian cuisine

Restaurants in the districts of Burgstall, Anger and Obersdorf serve Franconian specialities. If regional cuisine is part of your travel interests, these districts add to Hochstadt’s natural and historical attractions.

Lichtenfels as a regional setting

The wider destination of Lichtenfels offers different highlights from Hochstadt’s local history, including its old town and basketry culture. The old town of Lichtenfels has retained its distinctly Franconian character; the Bamberg Gate and Kronach Gate have been preserved, and parts of the old town wall are still visible. The 14-kilometre Erlebnisrundweg Pfad der Flechtkultur (Basketry Culture Experience Trail) connects Lichtenfels and Michelau along nature-friendly paths through the Main floodplains. Its 23 information boards focus on the history and tradition of basket making, the basket industry and the basket trade on the Upper Main. Near Oberwallenstadt, the trail’s installations include a willow labyrinth for children, a willow shell in the river swimming area and a woven tipi at Ortswiesensee; further works of woven art add to these stops. The Lichtenfels Basket Market takes place every year on the third weekend in September.

The Lichtenfels Town Palace houses municipal collections on the history of beer and brewing, the railway and the basket trade. The exhibits may change; check what is currently on offer when planning a specific visit.

Choose the right focus

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between these highlights: Hochstadt brings together the Main floodplains, ecclesiastical and monastic history, and Franconian specialities in the districts mentioned. Lichtenfels adds the old town, basketry culture and basket market to the regional picture. Decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay, and focus your accommodation search accordingly. This keeps your choice of holiday destination centred on the experiences you actually plan to enjoy.
