Schnabelwaid: Castle History and Trails

Around ten kilometres of hiking and cycling trails run around Schnabelwaid, leading as far as Bayreuth or Pegnitz. Another route is around 22 km long and runs from Schnabelwaid to Creußen. The caves offer different kinds of visits: the Devil’s Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. During “Sophie at Night,” visitors explore the three chambers of Sophienhöhle at their own pace, without a group tour; lighting effects and music accompany the experience. A guided tour is required at one cave, while the other puts the focus on exploring at your own pace.

At the Ochsenkopf, there are well-marked hiking trails, the all-weather “Alpine Coaster” toboggan run, a mountain cart track, the North and South cable cars, and downhill and single-track trails. Winter sports options include a 1,900 m-long south-facing ski run and four groomed Alpine pistes. Some of the pistes have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m. Hiking and tobogganing, mountain carting, cable cars and winter sports can thus be considered as distinct attractions.

The regional food culture of the Bayreuth district includes numerous beer gardens, most of them associated with their own breweries, butcher shops or bakeries. Traditional inns serve Franconian dining-room fare and regional specialities. This adds a culinary focus to the range of landscapes, culture and activities.
