Warmensteinach lies on the southern slope of the 1,024-metre-high Ochsenkopf in the Fichtelgebirge. The town combines an extensive range of hiking opportunities with insights into crafts, forest use and local history. This makes it possible to enjoy active hours outdoors alongside smaller cultural discoveries. When planning your vacation, consider whether you mainly want to explore the hiking trails or also include selected cultural stops and event dates.

Hiking on the Ochsenkopf

Warmensteinach has more than 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails. These include family trails, the wellness hiking trail around the Ochsenkopf, the Jägersteig trail and guided hikes around Warmensteinach. There are several themes to choose from: a tour connected with the Ochsenkopf, the Jägersteig or a guided hike. Trail availability and conditions may vary seasonally; check the current situation before setting out.

A dedicated trail in the grounds of the information centre passes 17 stations featuring elements of the cultural landscape and the history of the Grassemann clearing. It can also be visited when the building is closed. The stations combine exercise with a closer look at the landscape and its history—an alternative way to spend a hiking day compared with a tour focused solely on the distance.

Discovering crafts and history

At Zindulka’s workshop, children and adults can watch how hand-wound glass beads are made and try making them themselves. If you plan a visit, check the visitor arrangements in advance. This allows you to include the workshop as a separate activity alongside your hikes.

The history of the buildings and the town also offers some specific points of interest. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Warmensteinach was consecrated on 30 August 1705. From the wrought-iron gate, ten steps lead down to the main entrance. The Schwärzer House is a log building in Grassemann dating from 1698. An exhibition in the barn at Haus Grassemann No. 3 introduces visitors to the history of forest use. Together, these places show different aspects of local history: sacred architecture, historic building techniques and the relationship with the forest.

Recurring events throughout the year

Recurring events at the Grassemann Open-Air Museum include the Easter market on Palm Sunday and, in September, the oven festival with farmers’ market; check the programme for the relevant year. The motorcycle weekend over the Ascension Day weekend is also a recurring event in Warmensteinach. In August, the Bayreuth Festival of Young Artists visits Warmensteinach with “Music International”; the Warmensteinach Christmas Market is held on the second weekend in December. If an event is the deciding factor for your trip, check the programme for the relevant year.

Looking beyond Warmensteinach

The wider Bayreuth destination offers additional activities at the Ochsenkopf: well-marked hiking trails, the all-weather “Alpine Coaster” toboggan run, a mountain-cart track, the North and South gondola lifts, and downhill and single-track trails. In winter, the options include a 1,900-metre-long south-facing slope and four groomed alpine ski runs; some have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m. The range of options makes it easier to choose the focus for your vacation days—hiking, winter activities or other mountain experiences.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Warmensteinach, first consider which local themes you want to shape your trip: hiking trails on the Ochsenkopf, the sites in Grassemann, crafts or an event. If you also want to include the activities mentioned in the wider Bayreuth destination, consider those separately as you continue planning your trip.
