This gives you a different hiking option from the routes that lead from there to the Piesenhauser Hochalm in summer. These hikes are varied and well signposted. Another option is the roughly 3.5-kilometre natural toboggan run. It starts at the mountain station at 1,040 metres and descends through the snow-covered mountain forest to the valley station. Churches and history in Marquartstein
The Catholic parish church of “Zum kostbaren Blut” (Precious Blood) stands in the town centre and was built in 1936. Its interior features paintings by Werner Schön, an artist from the district of Piesenhausen. A visit to the church can therefore also offer a glimpse of the work of an artist who came from a Marquartstein district.
The Schnappenkirche is also located within the municipality. It was built between 1637 and 1640 on the orders of the provosts of Herrenchiemsee Abbey, to plans by Wolfgang König, the city architect of Traunstein. From the Schnappenkirche, the view stretches across the Chiemgau mountain landscape to Lake Chiemsee. A church service is held there every year on 25 July. Its building history, mountain views and annual service make the church a special cultural site within the municipality.
Another historical connection to music: on 10 September 1894, Richard Strauss married the singer Pauline de Ahna at St. Veit Castle Church. Along with Marquartstein’s two churches, this story offers another cultural point of interest for a stay that takes in local history as well as the landscape and outdoor activities.
