The market square showcases Oettingen’s architectural diversity on its opposite sides: Baroque-style gables stand to the east, and half-timbered gables to the west. The square forms the centre of the town centre. The town hall is also located there and is one of the most magnificent half-timbered buildings in Swabia. The Residenzschloss (residential palace) was built in the late Renaissance style between 1679 and 1687. The master builder Mathias Weiß from Kassel built it for the Oettingen-Spielberg line. Another historic building is the 400-year-old Königsturm, the town gate of Oettingen facing Nördlingen. The palace and tower represent different aspects of the town’s history: the residence of the Oettingen-Spielberg line on the one hand, and a town gate facing a specified direction on the other.
