Castle ruins and Schlossberg hill
The settlement on Schlossberg hill dates back to prehistoric times, and the first fortification was built in the 10th century. Several distinctive features of the surviving Kallmünz castle ruins are described: a round keep with two stepped levels and an elevated entrance, a chapel built onto the north side of the palas, and the palas, which still stands two storeys high. From there, you can look out over the market square. The main castle stood at the very end of the promontory, directly above the steep slopes down to the Naab and Vils.
Several paths lead from Kallmünz to the ruins. The Burgensteige trails also connect them with more than 40 castles in the Regensburg region. Art trails and walks
The Kallmünz Sculpture Trail features a diverse collection of contemporary sculptures that have been permanently installed in the town’s public spaces over recent decades. The recommended circular route starts at the old Netto car park at Dinauer Straße 6. It passes through the Inner Market, climbs about 150 metres in elevation to Schlossberg hill, and continues to the Outer Market. These stops and the climb create a clear progression between the market and the higher ground. When planning your visit, note that some artworks, especially those on Schlossberg hill, are only accessible to a limited extent for people with reduced mobility.
The Kallmünz section of the Hemau–Beratzhausen–Kallmünz Fruit Experience Trail offers a different theme. The walking trail is about 2.5 kilometres long and focuses on “Fruit trees as timber—what artists, designers and weather watchers look for in fruit trees.” Here, the focus is not on castle architecture, but on what people with different interests discover in fruit trees. If you enjoy walking, you can choose this themed stroll as a separate option alongside the climb to Schlossberg hill.
Canoe trips on the Naab and Vils
Kallmünz also offers a choice of routes on the water. One canoe leg on the Naab runs from Kallmünz to Mariaort. The Steinwehr Kallmünz weir and the Naab bridge south of town, on the access road from Gessendorfer Straße, are listed as possible launch and landing points for this leg. At the weir, boats can be hauled overland below it at kilometre 22.1. There is parking at the confluence of the Vils and the Naab.
The stretch of the Vils from Hahnbach to Kallmünz is navigable by canoe. The approximately 55 kilometres can be divided into around six stages; the last runs from Dietldorf to Kallmünz. Here, the Vils flows into the Naab. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a single stage on the Naab and the longer Vils route, which can be split into sections. The distances given are approximate: the Vils route is about 55 kilometres and takes around six stages.
