Ammersee: Art, Lakeside Paths and Boat Trips
Accommodation in Ammersee
Wooded moraine hills frame Lake Ammersee. Paths along the shore lead through nature and bird sanctuaries, while boats connect destinations around the lake. There is also an artist’s house with a garden, Baroque architecture and cultural events in a church. This makes it possible to shape your stay around activities on the water, walks along the shore and art.
Lakeside scenery on two wheels and on foot
Route 39, the “Ammersee Circular Route,” is a 45.8-kilometre cycling tour of moderate difficulty. It runs mostly along the lakeshore and passes through nature and bird sanctuaries. The starting point is Dießen railway station. The length, difficulty rating and route give the circular tour a clear profile; it is worth checking the latest route details before setting off.
Herrsching offers other ways to experience the lakeside scenery: the 2.6-kilometre Promenade Tour runs along the lake north of the town to Herrschinger Kreuz and is rated very easy. The Ammersee Tour also follows the shore near Herrsching, passing through the Wartaweil nature reserve. Compared with the long cycling loop, these routes focus on shorter distances and a different stretch of scenery.
Art, gardens and architecture
On the west shore, in Holzhausen, stands the Gasteiger Artist’s House. The former residence is a unique ensemble of Munich Art Nouveau architecture and is now a museum. It displays sculptures by Mathias Gasteiger and paintings by his wife, Anna Sophie. She also laid out the garden, which the two artists often used as an “outdoor studio.” Together, the house and garden tell the story of their artistic lives: the works do not stand alone, but form part of an ensemble that also embraces the outdoor space.
In Dießen, the Baroque Marienmünster is a worthwhile stop for anyone who wants to include architecture in their holiday. In Breitbrunn, the Kulturkirche opens the church space of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche to contemporary artists for musical, literary and visual arts events. In the area around Ammersee, Andechs Abbey is also considered one of the main attractions.
Getting around the lake by boat and train
Bayerische Seenschifffahrt operates passenger boat services on Lake Ammersee. From Easter to mid-October, boats run regularly between numerous landing stages, connecting key destinations for day trips. If you plan to take a boat trip, check the timetable for your visit dates in advance.
The railway also serves towns on the west and south shores: on the Augsburg–Schongau line, BRB trains stop at Schondorf, Utting, Dießen and Raisting. This connection may be a factor when choosing where to stay; check specific train times separately.
The King Ludwig Way leads via Andechs Abbey to Herrsching and its steamer landing stage. From there, you can cross to Dießen am Ammersee or continue along the shore to Raisting. This gives you a choice of different ways to continue your tour. If you plan to take the crossing, check the current timetable here too.
Choosing the right place for your holiday apartment
When looking for a holiday apartment at Ammersee, let the focus of your planned holiday guide your choice of location. In Dießen, you’ll find the circular route’s starting point at the railway station and the Marienmünster; Herrsching combines the Promenade Tour with the Ammersee Tour through Wartaweil. If you’re mainly interested in cycling, you can factor in the length and moderate difficulty of Route 39. For a trip focused on shorter lakeside walks or seasonal boat trips, other experiences will matter more. So first consider which of these activities you want to shape your days, then search specifically in the places that suit that focus.
