The Pleinfeld recreation area lies on the southeastern shore of the Großer Brombachsee and includes a bathing beach. Seasonal conditions may affect its use. There are predominantly flat, well-maintained and consistently signposted cycling paths around Pleinfeld: they lead from one lake to another or around the lakes. They run almost entirely away from road traffic and are especially noted as suitable for families with children. Conditions on individual paths may vary. A different aspect of the landscape can be found in Pleinfeld’s district of Mischelbach. There, on the Igelseebach in the border area between the Franconian Lake District and Altmühltal Nature Park, lies the protected landscape feature Erlenauwald und Feuchtwiese bei Mischelbach (alder floodplain forest and wet meadow near Mischelbach). It has been protected since 1992 and covers about 10.34 hectares. Its name brings together two clearly identified landscape features: alder floodplain forest and wet meadow.

Hiking with Specific Destinations

Pleinfeld Hiking Trail No. 82 starts at the forest car park on the edge of Pleinfeld, near the sports park. It leads via Mandlesmühle to Allmannsdorf; the return route goes via the Brombachsee main dam back to Pleinfeld. At Mandlesmühle, the route passes the Franconian Lake District Information Centre. Along the way, there are views over the lake and into the Brombachtal valley. The route connects named places with a return to Pleinfeld and makes the views over the lake and valley part of the tour.

Pleinfeld is also a starting point for longer tours on the “Der Seenländer” circular hiking trail. This is another hiking option alongside Trail No. 82. If you enjoy spending your days on foot, you can choose between a described circuit with specific stops and tours on the larger circular trail.

Local History and Roman Traces

The local history and brewery museum preserves evidence of Pleinfeld’s history since the Middle Ages. The attic houses a brewery section devoted to beer production: its thematic scope ranges from hops to wooden casks and swing-top bottles. The museum thus brings local history together with an engaging look at brewing.

Roman border fortifications are another part of Pleinfeld’s historical story. The small fort near Gündersbach is one of a series of structures measuring about 20 × 20 metres, built immediately behind the Limes line as part of the Roman border fortifications. The approximate dimensions give an idea of the scale of these structures, while their location behind the Limes line explains their connection to the border fortifications.

The show garden at Mandlesmühle is a reminder of the village culture that disappeared beneath the lakes. It adds a recollection of village life and culture to the historical themes. The museum, small fort and show garden each offer a distinct perspective: local history, Roman border fortifications and the memory of village culture.

The Limes is also part of the wider travel destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen: it runs for around 40 kilometres across the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. These regional points of interest broaden the view of Roman history without conflating the sites in Pleinfeld with attractions in Weißenburg.

Trains depart from Pleinfeld station in both directions approximately every half hour. An example timetable gives a journey time of 35 minutes for the train connection from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof.
