Churches and traditions throughout the year

The Catholic Chapel of St. Florian, dating from the 18th century, stands in Altmummen, a district of Blaichach. Its furnishings include a splendid altarpiece. The Catholic Church of St. Martin is also located in Blaichach. Both places of worship provide tangible points of reference for exploring the town’s cultural history.

The Martinusritt, a horseback procession with a blessing of the horses, has been held every year in Blaichach since 1652. The Advent market offers a different seasonal highlight: it is held each year on the evening before the first Sunday of Advent, in the paved forecourt of the church and town hall. The horse blessing is the focus of the Martinusritt, while the Advent market is defined by its fixed date before the first Sunday of Advent and its stated venue. If you would like to plan your trip around either of these celebrations, check your travel dates against the event dates.

Gunzesried and activities in the surrounding area

The Blaichach district of Gunzesried is known for its flora, fauna and hiking trails. The Viehscheid, the annual return of cattle from the mountain pastures, takes place there every year on September 17. In mid-September, herders bring their herds down from the alpine pastures into the Gunzesried Valley. The celebration is therefore linked to the seasonal movement of the herds. The Cheese and Herb Summer is another seasonal offering in Blaichach, featuring guided hikes and workshops. These events and activities give you different reasons to tailor your stay to the season and the activities you are looking for.

The 3-Lakes Loop starts at Blaichach railway station and follows the Iller Cycle Path to nearby Inselsee. The lake has water-ski lifts, an Aqua Park, Aqua Chimp, a café and a beer garden. Activities there make for a different kind of day out than visiting the churches or attending a traditional festival. As opening and operating schedules can vary by season, check in advance which activities are available during your trip.

For a winter option, the Gunzesried-Säge cross-country ski trail is located nearby. It is 12.5 kilometres long and classified as difficult. Its length and difficulty rating provide specific points of reference for planning, although grooming and snow conditions may vary. By contrast, the Cheese and Herb Summer features guided hikes and workshops, while activities at Inselsee depend on the season. The options therefore differ not only in the type of activity, but also in when you travel.

The wider Oberallgäu region

In the wider Oberallgäu region, Oberstdorf offers a different focus: it has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. The Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill in Oberstdorf can also be visited; visitors can take the tower lift to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower. These destinations add hiking trails and a viewpoint to the range of options in the Oberallgäu. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on Blaichach and its surroundings or include activities in Oberstdorf as well.

Finding the right base for your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Blaichach, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: local history and events, guided activities, or seasonal outdoor pursuits. Also bear in mind that the options listed are spread across Blaichach, Gunzesried and nearby destinations. To explore another nearby village, you can also visit Bihlerdorf. If Oberstdorf is also part of your holiday plans, consider it a separate regional focus when choosing your accommodation.
