Three mountain railways in Oberstaufen take you up into the mountains or make it easier to descend back into the valley. The Hochgratbahn takes you up to Oberstaufen’s local mountain and into the high Alpine landscape. Four hiking trails in Oberstaufen have been awarded the “Premium Hiking Trail” distinction by the German Hiking Institute. The tour finder offers a selection of more than 200 trails. Experience Nature: Imberg and Hündle

The Alperlebnispfad at Imberg was updated for the 2026 summer season. Its 47 stations combine physical activity with fascinating facts about local flora and fauna, as well as life and work on the alpine pastures.

Near Oberstaufen, Germany’s first MounTeens detective trail leads through puzzle and activity stations into the Hündle hiking area. Crocuses bloom there in the mountain region in spring; the timing can vary. If you would like to see this seasonal natural spectacle, it is best to check on the bloom closer to your visit.

Different priorities can shape your holiday plans: mountain railway rides and premium hiking trails focus on the mountain scenery, while the stations at Imberg explore flora, fauna and life and work on the alpine pastures, and the trail at Hündle combines puzzles with physical activity. The Wider Oberallgäu Travel Region

Cycling in the Oberallgäu ranges from leisurely rides to more challenging routes. Traditional mountain huts serve regional specialities; what is available at individual huts may vary. The wider region also offers interests beyond the hiking and nature experiences that define Oberstaufen.

In this wider travel region, the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is located in Immenstadt-Bühl, right by Lake Alpsee. The free-to-enter interactive exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. From Immenstadt station, the Achis Wasserweg themed trail takes 30 minutes on foot to reach the centre; in bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check the timetable and walking time in advance.

Oberstdorf in the Oberallgäu also offers its own attractions: there are 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. Visitors can also tour the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill; the tower lift takes them to the viewing platform atop the ski jump tower.
