Danube Source and Palace Gardens

The Danube Source rises right beside the princely palace. Its present-day structure was built in 1875 by Prince Karl Egon III of Fürstenberg. The Princely Fürstenberg Residence Palace sits by the source in an extensive park with mature trees, ponds and streams. The park is ideal for a stroll and provides a scenic contrast to the historic buildings. St. Johann’s Church also stands right beside the enclosed Danube Source. It was built between 1724 and 1747 in the Bohemian Baroque style. The Danube Temple stands where the water from the Danube Source flows into the Brigach. It has been there since 1910 and was extensively restored in 2016. The source, church and temple offer several distinct historical points of interest: the enclosed source, an 18th-century church and a temple whose history dates back to the early 20th century.

The Princely Fürstenberg Collections at Karlsplatz cover a range of subjects across around 2,500 square metres. They include minerals and fossils, a natural history collection with numerous specimens—most of them around 150 years old—and contemporary art. Donaueschingen is the starting point of the Danube Cycle Route.
