On foot: the Hedgerow Experience Trail

The 4.9-kilometre Hedgerow Experience Trail uses 25 explanatory panels to introduce the distinctive features of the hedgerow habitat. Interactive features such as ground-level viewing windows and search activities complement the information. There is a wild bee hotel at Station 11. The trail combines nature topics with small activities and specific observation points. If you are planning a stay with an interest in local habitats, the trail offers a distinct focus alongside the cycling and cultural options.

Another themed route is the 6.5-kilometre Bräunlingen Beer Trail. Its seven stations cover interesting facts about beer. If you prefer cycling, you can explore the 18.1-kilometre Breg and Brigach Floodplain Cycle Route, a cycle route through Bräunlingen in the Danube source region. Mountain bikers can take the 3.9-kilometre Schellenberg Trail, a singletrack. The Heidenloch Bike Park also includes a trail park for technically minded mountain bikers. These options offer different experiences: a themed trail, a longer cycling route and trail riding.

Lake Kirnberg and nearby trails

Lake Kirnberg is located near Bräunlingen. It has sunny beaches, shallow shores and large sunbathing lawns. Activities listed at the lake include stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and kitesurfing. An extensive network of hiking and cycling routes stretches around the lake and through the surrounding forests. On the south shore, an information board next to the toilet facilities on the circular route shows the locations of the six information panels, the protected areas around the lake and places to stop for refreshments. The lake offers both water-based activities and routes through the surrounding area.

Museums, art and local history

The Kelnhof Museum, which is over 100 years old, brings together artefacts relating to archaeology, history, folklore and art. The art collection includes limewood sculptures of Mary and John dating from around 1225. The Bräunlingen Forest Museum focuses on the history of Bräunlingen Forest on the Triberg and the forest habitat, with topics ranging from capercaillie to the plane tooth saw. The two museums therefore have different focuses: one covers collections from archaeology to art, while the other explores forest history and the forest habitat.

One of the town’s distinctive landmarks is the Mühlentor, formerly called the Niedertor. It is the last surviving of Bräunlingen’s original four town gates and is now considered a picturesque landmark. Since 1 August 2025, visitors and other interested people have been able to explore it independently. You can collect the key from the Tourist Information Office during opening hours by paying a deposit. The local Fasnacht carnival also has its own venue: in 1985, the former municipal electricity works were converted into the guild house by the Narrenzunft carnival guild and have been its home ever since. The exhibition about the local Fasnacht carnival and the guild room also opened in 1985.

Traditions and holiday ideas

Bräunlingen’s Fasnacht carnival celebrations begin even before Shrove Thursday: on Candlemas, the Urhexe (Original Witch) leaps out of the Druid Stone; the Hexenlaufen (Witches’ March) then continues until Ash Wednesday.
