Neckarbischofsheim: Castle Park, History and Hiking
Accommodation in Neckarbischofsheim
A castle park with mature trees, a 24-metre-high defensive tower and hiking trails of varying lengths give Neckarbischofsheim a varied character. The town lies among gentle hills on the border between the Kraichgau and the Kleiner Odenwald. Whether you are interested in nature, local history or longer routes, there are a range of things here that can shape your stay.

Castle Park and Landscape
The approximately 2.6-hectare castle park surrounds the Old Castle, a picturesque castle pond and a well-preserved Renaissance gate. Several distinctive features of the park can therefore be found side by side. The arboretum includes, among other things, about two trees that are more than 250 years old; particularly impressive specimens are marked with information panels. If you enjoy taking in nature and historic buildings while travelling, the park offers a fitting focus.
The surrounding area is also characterised by gentle hills. The town includes the districts of Helmhof and Untergimpern. Walks and longer hikes are possible within the municipal area and can also take in neighbouring communities. When planning your holiday, the kind of outing you have in mind is therefore a useful guide: a stay focused on the castle park and the town, or time for longer hiking routes in the surrounding area.
Towers, Walking Tour and Local History
The Pentagonal Tower is a 24-metre-high remnant of the town’s fortifications and is considered a landmark of Neckarbischofsheim. It dates from 1448. Since 1965, it has housed an exhibition on local history. Among the items on display are boundary stones, fossils and small Roman finds, as well as the furnishings of a farmhouse parlour and objects related to crafts and agriculture. Archival documents on the town’s history, association flags and uniforms complete the collection.
Those interested in historic sites can also include the Historic Walking Tour of the old town in their explorations. It covers 25 monuments with information panels and QR codes, which provide visitors with additional information and video clips. Individual buildings each tell their own story: the tower of the Protestant town church of “St. Salvator” was built in 1543. The Schmitthennerhaus is the birthplace of the poet and theologian Adolf Schmitthenner. Alexanderburg was built in the first half of the 16th century and is the birthplace of the poet Karl Mayer and the landscape painter Louis Mayer.
The Synagogue Square is also part of the town’s history. Remains of the walls of the Jewish place of worship, built in 1848, have been preserved there; a memorial stone commemorates its destruction during the November pogrom. Another chapter in local history is told by the town pharmacy: the building was constructed in 1824 in the Neoclassical Weinbrenner style and has been a pharmacy since 1881.
The local history museum displays objects and paintings that tell the story of the town and the Lords of Helmstatt, who were its local rulers from the 13th to the 19th century. The Adolf Schmitthenner Room contains works by the poets Karl Mayer and Adolf Schmitthenner, who were born in Neckarbischofsheim, as well as paintings by the landscape artist Louis Mayer. This lets you discover not only the town’s buildings, but also its people and artistic heritage.
Hiking and Other Excursions
Three circular hikes organised by the Odenwald Club Neckarbischofsheim start and finish in the castle park. The “Altenberg” route follows NB 4 and is 5.6 kilometres long; “Autenberg” follows NB 1 for 7.3 kilometres. At 18.0 kilometres, the “Helmhöfer Forsthaus” route on NB 3 is the longest of the three. The distances make it easier to choose a tour based on the length you have in mind, without treating the routes as if they were the same.
The Feldbahnfreunde’s narrow-gauge railway attraction offers a different kind of excursion at the edge of town on the road towards Helmhof. Operating days are offered during the summer months and on selected dates. Neckarbischofsheim also has an outdoor swimming pool as a summer leisure option. If you plan to spend your stay mainly exploring local history and going for walks, these excursion ideas complement the hiking routes; for a longer hike, you can consider the 18.0-kilometre route as a separate option.
