Playgrounds and trails along the Jagst River

Since 2019, Jagstzell has been home to the “Experience the Jagst” grounds, with a water playground, picnic benches, a sunbathing lawn and tiered seating. Play and outdoor breaks go hand in hand here. The health and multi-generational playground, which opened in 2014, offers a different mix: its facilities include a bocce court, a beach volleyball court, a skating and ice-skating rink, a chess area and a barbecue pavilion. The two facilities have different focuses: “Experience the Jagst” combines water play with a sunbathing lawn, while the multi-generational playground brings together a range of sports and play options.

A tree trail, also known as an arboretum, runs along the Jagst River. It draws attention to the trees and complements the play areas with a nature trail. For a guided hike, the first Tuesday of the month is a good option: a two-and-a-half- to three-hour tour in and around Jagstzell is offered then. Anyone interested can join without registering. Church, chapel and nature experiences

St. Vitus Church stands at the heart of Jagstzell village. St. Nicholas Chapel in Keuerstadt adds another historical landmark: it probably dates from the 13th century and features Early Gothic paintings. The two buildings offer different ways to explore local history—from the village centre to the chapel and its medieval design.

Those wishing to spend more time by the water can visit Lake Orrotsee in the area around Jagstzell. There are opportunities to swim, as well as a playground, a plant trail and a water-treading pool. Alongside the facilities in the village, this adds a distinct focus on nature and swimming. Check the current conditions at the lake before your visit.

Ostalbkreis: Limes landscape in Rainau

The Ostalbkreis district also offers further perspectives on cultural history, for example at the Limes in Rainau. The Upper German-Raetian Limes runs through the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen there for about six kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The most scenic sections and most significant individual monuments of the Limes are preserved in the Limes Park Rainau in a remarkable concentration. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb; the Limes Gate at Dalkingen is a unique structure along the entire Limes route between the Rhine and the Danube.

The Limes circular hiking trail near Rainau is about eleven kilometres long and takes approximately two and a half hours on foot. It leads from the Limes wall and tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through Mahdholz Forest, following the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg.
