Discover Heubach: Half-Timbered Houses, History and Trails
Accommodation in Heubach
Heubach combines a distinctive local history with a range of ways to enjoy active days. Half-timbered buildings define the town centre; alongside them are a local history museum arranged chronologically, historic sites and selected routes for various activities. When planning your holiday, you can first decide whether to focus on outdoor activities or the town’s history—or include both in your stay.
From Circular Trail to Excursion Destination
The archaopfad ROSENSTEIN® is a 6 km circular trail across the plateau of the mountain massif. The route description lists a total elevation gain of 266 metres and eleven stops; you can also walk the trail in sections. The Heubach Tour takes a different approach: it comprises 14 selected stages in Heubach and the surrounding area for hiking, cycling, jogging, Nordic walking, mountain biking and climbing. This lets you choose a route to suit the activity you have in mind: a circular trail with stops or a selection of stages for different activities.
Rosenstein is a worthwhile excursion destination nearby. Imposing rock formations, prehistoric ramparts, the castle ruins and far-reaching views bring together scenic impressions and traces of history. This offers a different perspective from the stops on the archaopfad: if you are particularly interested in rock formations, ancient fortifications and views, you can make Rosenstein a focus of its own.
History at Specific Sites
Several half-timbered buildings make up Heubach’s town centre. The local history museum “Heubacher Geschichtssplitter” covers the most important topics in Heubach’s history in chronological order. A guided historical town tour visits the Block Tower and the former weavers’ quarter; the “Anna Vetter” house is also included. The tour date depends on the availability of a guide.
The Vetter House is the former home of Heubach resident Anna Vetter and is furnished with items that closely reflect the original living conditions. It is not a conventional museum, but offers a glimpse into a past domestic setting. Visits are by appointment. This gives the house a different focus from the local history museum, which presents the town’s history chronologically.
Group Activities and Sightseeing Flights
Since December 2008, the historic classroom has been located in the Knights’ Hall of Heubach Castle. The Förderverein Schwäbisch Gmünder Schulmuseum e.V. offers schools, teachers and other groups the chance to experience a lesson there as it would have been around 1900. The activity is intended for these groups; please arrange current options with the association.
Sightseeing flights can be booked through Flugschule Heubach Charterservice GmbH. As booking options may change, please check directly with the flight school before your trip.
More to Explore in the Ostalbkreis
The wider destination of Ostalbkreis offers additional cultural and landscape highlights. In Rainau, especially beautiful sections and significant individual monuments of the Limes have been preserved in remarkable concentration in the Limes Park. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb. The Limestor Dalkingen is a unique structure along the entire stretch of the Limes between the Rhine and the Danube.
Lorch Abbey also offers a distinctive historical focus in the Ostalbkreis. It was founded in 1102 as a burial place by the first Hohenstaufen, Frederick I, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen. The complex includes a medieval church, the cloister, farm buildings and the Marsiliusturm, with views of the abbey grounds, herb garden, sensory garden and surrounding area. The permanent exhibition explores 900 years of abbey history, including through the decorated Lorch choir books.
