Heuchlingen combines a distinctive river landscape with architectural history and a network of trails. The Lein flows through the northwestern part of the municipality in a winding Keuper valley. A longer cycling route also passes through the town, along with trails maintained by the Swabian Alb Association in several directions. This gives you a choice when planning your holiday: you can focus your stay more on cycling, walking trails or historic buildings.

The Lein, cycling routes and trails

The Lein flows through the northwestern part of the municipality of Heuchlingen in a winding Keuper valley. If you enjoy cycling, the 48-kilometre Leintal Cycle Route runs from Abtsgmünd through Heuchlingen to Welzheim. Check the latest route information before setting off.

The Heuchlingen local group of the Swabian Alb Association maintains two trail networks: one between Heuchlingen and Untergröningen, and the other between the Limes and the Büchelberger Grat ridge. A section of the second network is part of the Swabian-Franconian Way of St. James. The Leintal Cycle Route gives you a cycling day with named starting and end points; for the trail networks, you can follow the sections described for each. As details of maintained trails may change, check the current route before your trip.

The Heuchlingen Alb Association Hut stands on Galgenberg. In the 2026 schedule, it is open from October to April on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. It is also open on the second Wednesday of each month, except in August. These details apply to the 2026 schedule; if your stay is later, please check the opening hours then in effect.

Churches and architectural history

The Catholic parish church of St. Vitus was built in 1733 and extended in 1850. It houses an oil painting by the Jesuit Jakob Eylvius, dated 1591. The painting therefore predates the church by a long time, bringing an older artistic reference into the architectural history of the 18th century.

The late Baroque Chapel of St. George is also part of Heuchlingen’s architectural heritage: it was built in 1757. The dates offer a concrete point of comparison between two religious buildings in the town. For the parish church, the focus is on its construction and later extension; for the chapel, on its late Baroque character and year of construction. In this way, local history can be traced through individual buildings and their different dates.

More places to explore in the Ostalbkreis

The history of the Limes is a distinct focus of the wider Ostalbkreis travel destination. The Upper German-Raetian Limes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and runs for about six kilometres through the area of the municipality of Rainau, in Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen. Particularly scenic sections and significant individual monuments have been preserved in exceptional concentration in Limes Park Rainau. A reconstructed watchtower there offers panoramic views across the Ostalb. The Dalkingen Limes Gate is a unique structure along the entire Limes route between the Rhine and the Danube.

Another hiking option in the Ostalbkreis is the Limes circular trail near Rainau, which is about 11 kilometres long and takes approximately two and a half hours on foot. The signposted trail leads from the Limes wall and Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through Mahdholz Forest, along the Limes, and on to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. Its length and walking time give you a concrete guide for planning this hike.

Another historic highlight in the Ostalbkreis is Lorch Abbey. It was founded in 1102 by Frederick I, the first Hohenstaufen ruler, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen as their burial place. The complex includes a medieval church, the cloister, farm buildings and the Marsilius Tower, which offers views of the abbey grounds, herb garden, sensory garden and surrounding area. The permanent exhibition explores 900 years of abbey history, including through the richly decorated Lorch choir books. The Ostalbkreis therefore brings together a range of cultural highlights: the history of the Limes at Rainau and the history of the abbey at Lorch.
