Town History and Music at the District Museum
The Buchen District Museum is housed in two buildings belonging to the former Electoral Mainz administrative winery: the Stone Building dating from 1493 and the Trunzer House. The Stone Building displays rural and bourgeois living rooms, Baier cupboards typical of the Odenwald, clothing, Odenwald traditional costumes and a toy collection. The various exhibits offer insights into domestic culture, clothing and toys.
At the Trunzer House, you can listen to excerpts from compositions by Joseph Martin Kraus (1756–1792) in a dedicated room. The district museum thus brings together collection objects and music as different ways of experiencing culture. If you are interested in architectural history, you can also visit the watchtower: it stands southeast of Buchen on Wartberg, which is 394 metres above sea level. The tower is 14 metres high. According to its building inscription, it was built or renovated in 1490 and served as a lookout tower in times of war, warning the inhabitants of the fortified medieval town of approaching enemy troops.
The town tower also offers a glimpse into Buchen’s past. It is the Mainz Gate and one of the four former gate towers within the town fortifications. Above the outer archway is the Blecker, Buchen’s widely known carnival symbol. A walking route passes St. Oswald’s Town Church, the Old Buchen Town Hall, the Beginenklösterle and the town tower. This makes it possible to include several named town landmarks in one walking loop.
Forests, Animals and Outdoor Trails
The Hasenwald wildlife enclosure is located in Hettingen, a district of Buchen. The Vogelfreunde e.V. association looks after a small wildlife park integrated into a wooded area of around 9,000 square metres. The animals kept there include various bird species in aviaries, as well as sheep, guinea pigs, rabbits, goats and a pony. A nature trail for exploring the forest and a small playground round out the facilities. Families can enjoy animals, a woodland theme and a playground as different points of interest.
If you would rather explore the surrounding area along a longer route, the Sculpture Cycle Route offers another option. It is 77 kilometres long and connects tourist destinations in the region along two loops. There are 25 sculptures in total along the route; the western loop passes through Buchen. The landscape around the town—forests, meadow valleys and streams—offers a different focus from the town towers and museum collections.
Discovering Regional Geology
In the wider Neckar-Odenwald district travel destination, the 6.9-kilometre “Stalactite Caves Trail” begins at the Klinge youth village near Seckach and leads to the Eberstadt stalactite cave. The cave is estimated to be three to five million years old. It is 600 metres long and can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Advance reservations online or by phone are requested; admission is not guaranteed without a reservation. Check the visiting conditions when planning your trip.
The Eberstadt stalactite cave visitor centre uses multimedia displays at several stations to present the history of the Earth and the period of the Muschelkalk Sea in an accessible way. A geological nature trail with information boards on geology, landscape and ecology also starts at the car park. You can choose between a guided cave tour and information along the trail; the cave itself can only be visited on a guided tour.
