Wittlingen is one of the oldest places in the Lörrach district; documentary references date back to the years 767 and 874.

The present-day church in Wittlingen was built in 1874 by a relative of the Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner; an earlier church was dedicated to Saint Martin.

Wittlingen lies in the Kandertal valley, directly next to the district town of Lörrach and within the Basel metropolitan region, which is connected to Switzerland.
