Fröhnd: Trails, Winter and Village History

Shady forests and sunny, open mountain slopes shape the landscape in Fröhnd. There are also themed trails, a range of cycling options and winter activities. Historic buildings and a chapel with a Rococo altar are also part of the village’s character. This gives you plenty of ways to tailor your stay to different interests, rather than viewing Fröhnd simply as a starting point for a single activity.

Landscape and Trails in Fröhnd

The municipality comprises nine districts: Hof, Ittenschwand, Kastel, Unterkastel, Ober- and Niederhepschingen, Künaberg, Stutz and Holz. They lie at elevations of between 400 and 1,200 metres. Together with the transition from shady forests to sunny, open mountain slopes, this creates a varied landscape. When planning your trip, both the districts and their elevations can serve as useful points of reference, though neither alone describes a particular route.

If you want to explore on foot, Fröhnd has two themed trails: the Hirtenpfad and the Urwaldpfad. Another local feature is the tunnel on the former railway line between Niederhepschingen and Unterkastel. Parts of the former route were developed as a cycling and hiking trail in the 1970s. The village’s history thus brings together an old railway line and the later use of parts of the route for cycling and walking.

Mountain Biking or E-Biking

Fröhnd has numerous mountain biking routes along broad forest roads and narrow trails. This variety gives you a clear choice for your ride: would you prefer to cycle on wider forest roads or include narrow trails in your plans? Another option is described for e-bikes: an asphalted ridge trail leads towards Pfaffenberg; you can then return along the Wiesental Cycle Route towards the Upper Wiesental. As well as mountain biking routes, there is therefore an e-bike tour with a specified direction and return route.

Winter Activities

Two cross-country ski trails with different profiles start at Tannenboden, between the districts of Hof and Ittenschwand. The 25.9-kilometre Hörnerspur is a high-altitude trail with an elevation difference of 818 metres. By contrast, the Tannenbodenloipe is short and easy, and is suitable for practising both classic and skating techniques. If you are looking for a longer route, you can use the Hörnerspur details as a guide; if you want to practise the two techniques, the Tannenbodenloipe is the right choice.

In winter, the Hornlift in the district of Hof offers skiing and snowboarding. It is 1,000 metres long and covers an elevation difference of 300 metres. The lift and cross-country trails thus add different kinds of winter sports to the activities available. Buildings, Chapel and Farm Visit

The buildings also give Fröhnd a distinctive historical character. The Kastler Bridge in the district of Unterkastel is an arch bridge over the Wiese. It was built in 1908/09 and renovated in 1981. In Ittenschwand, a chapel built in 1767 contains a Rococo altar depicting Mater Dolorosa. The Klopfsäge was built in 1808 and is a listed monument. The bridge, chapel and sawmill each represent a different architectural style and period.

The Leopoldhof offers another way to get to know Fröhnd: guided farm tours are available, and the farm’s own products are sold directly at the farm. This can be a distinct focus alongside trails, cycling routes and historic buildings.
