Tunau: A quiet village at the end of the high valley

Village character and getting there

The route from Lörrach follows the B 317 through Zell and Schönau im Schwarzwald. In Schönau, take the turn towards Tunau. You can use this sequence as a guide when planning your journey; check road conditions and signposting before setting off. In the village itself, its location at the end of the high valley and the absence of through traffic shape its character. Bischmatt and Michelrütte are also part of the municipality and add to the picture of Tunau as a village area made up of several parts.

The Herz-Jesu-Kapelle (Sacred Heart Chapel) was consecrated in 1901 in honour of Saint Wendelin, the Divine Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint Jude Thaddeus. The altar also reflects the chapel’s furnishings: it was made by the Gebrüder Marmon workshop in Sigmaringen and features decorative images, including one of the chapel’s patron saint. The consecration and the four dedications provide a tangible link to local history, while the workshop’s work invites a closer look at the chapel’s artistic design.

The “Pfad ins Erdaltertum” (Path into the Ancient Earth) themed trail offers a different way to experience the landscape. It leads to the Zweistädteblick viewpoint and provides insight into the region’s eventful geological history. The trail thus combines views from the lookout with a geological theme. In summer, numerous hiking trails also lead from Tunau into the surrounding region.
