Hohenfels between Moorland, Culture and Hiking Trails

Castle History and Culture at the Lebensraum Garden

A branch of the Salem boarding school was housed in Hohenfels Castle from 1931 to 2017. This clearly defined period is a specific reference point in the town’s history and the history of the castle.

Today, the Lebensraum Garden Hohenfels is a cultural venue. A series of events is held there every year during the summer half of the year. The programme includes concerts, readings, themed events and children’s theatre, in the willow pavilion or outdoors. Waltere Moor: Diverse Habitats

The Waltere Moor nature reserve lies on the northwestern edge of the Hohenfels municipal district and borders the Schwackenreuter Seen nature reserve. It sits in a shallow hollow at an elevation of about 630 m above sea level. Waltere Moor includes a wet woodland area, as well as smaller, open fen meadows and dry grassland areas. Both wet and dry terrain are therefore part of this landscape.

The moor covers about 95 hectares. Around two thirds lie within the Hohenfels municipal district, with the remainder in the Sauldorf municipal district in the district of Sigmaringen.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

The Hegau Way of St. James passes through the Hohenfels area: it skirts the Sattelöse in Liggersdorf and heads southwest towards Mindersdorf, passing the parish church of St. Laurentius and Oswald and crossing the Steig in Deutwang on its way to Ursaul. The long-distance Meßkirch–Lake Constance hiking trail, maintained by the Black Forest Association and the Swabian Alb Association, is marked with a blue diamond.

Another hiking route starts at the car park of the Hohenfels natural swimming pool in Kalkofen. At the edge of the forest, you can enjoy a view of Hohenfels Castle and the Hegau landscape. Orientation in the Lake District

At the southwestern edge of the lake district, on the boundary between the Mühlingen and Hohenfels municipal districts, an information board and viewing platform provide an overview of the watershed and the lake district.
