Monastic History and Places of Remembrance
The historic Denkendorf Monastery includes a monastery church with a significant crypt, a Staufer stele, the parish barn and Monastery Lake. Its history dates back to a community of canons of the Holy Sepulchre founded in 1129. Since 2015, a stele made of Jurassic travertine in the monastery courtyard has commemorated the close connection between the community and the Staufers.
Friedrich Hölderlin is also connected with Denkendorf: from 1784 to 1786, he was a seminarian at the Denkendorf monastery school. Since 2020, a fountain and a plaque beneath the monastery, in the Maierhof, have commemorated him. The Rolf-Deuschle Local History Museum displays agricultural and craft collections from the past of Denkendorf’s village community. It is located at two addresses: Kirchstraße 2, in the basement of the Zum Alten Bären inn, and Kirchstraße 9.
Paths by Monastery Lake and Erlach Lake
A circular path with a promenade runs around Monastery Lake, with sections crossing the water on piers. Additional viewing piers and an open seating area are located near the entrance. The circular route thus combines views of the lake with a path that runs directly over the water in places.
At Erlach Lake, a walking path leads from the dam onto a grass track and in a wide arc around the nature reserve; a path close to the lake runs along its northern and eastern sides. The Erlach Lake Landscape Protection Area was expanded in 1975 and designated a nature reserve in 1989. The paths and the history of the protected area give the outing a different focus from the promenade at Monastery Lake.
Kugelpfad and Hiking Trails
The Kugelpfad is about 2.5 kilometres long and features various marble runs as well as 13 quiz and adventure stations. It follows asphalt and dirt tracks and is easy to navigate with a stroller. A companion is recommended for wheelchair users. As a local recreation destination, the trail is available to families with children, day visitors, school and kindergarten groups, as well as local community groups and clubs.
Two hiking trails also pass through Denkendorf. The Main-Neckar-Rhein-Weg, long-distance hiking trail no. 3, is marked with its own trail signs. The Way of St James comes from Berkheim and runs through Denkendorf via Lenaustraße, Goethestraße, Eichersteige, Kirchstraße and Friedhofsstraße. The Hohenzollern Cycle Route is 188 kilometres long and runs from Esslingen am Neckar through Denkendorf, Schönbuch Nature Park, the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Jura, the Danube Valley and Hegau to the western edge of Lake Constance. Denkendorf is therefore on a route that connects a variety of landscapes.
