Esslingen am Neckar combines an old town shaped by half-timbered architecture with a striking castle and distinctive vineyards. This makes it possible to plan a trip around different interests: the city’s history, changing cultural events, experiences on the canals or walks through the landscape. Half-Timbered Houses, Castle and City History
More than 200 half-timbered houses stand in Esslingen’s old town. A half-timbered house at Heugasse 3 was built in 1261 and is considered the oldest half-timbered house in Germany. Nine former administrative courtyards are also still part of the cityscape. These buildings give a walk through the old town a tangible historical setting without requiring any single building to take center stage.
The city’s most striking landmark for almost 700 years has been Esslingen Castle. The climb involves more than 300 steps and rewards visitors with views over the city. If you include a visit to the castle in your day’s plans, you can combine it with an interest in architecture and city history. The permanent exhibition at the Esslingen City Museum in the Gelbes Haus at Hafenmarkt 7 covers the period from the first mention of Esslingen in 777 through to the 20th century. Beneath St. Dionysius Church, the Excavation Museum presents the church’s predecessor buildings and the beginnings of the city’s history from the 8th century onward.
Museums, Art and Events
The J. F. Schreiber Museum in the Salemer Pfleghof at Untere Beutau 8–10 tells the story of the Schreiber publishing house and its products, including cardboard models, classroom wall charts, paper theaters, and nature and children’s books. New models are continually being made at a large craft table. This offers a vivid glimpse into the world of the publishing house and its products. The City of Esslingen Gallery at Villa Merkel presents changing exhibitions of contemporary and international art; check the current program if you are interested.
Music and festivals can also shape your stay. At the Esslingen Master Concerts, renowned orchestras and soloists perform at the Dicke Turm on Esslingen Castle grounds. The festival program includes the Schwörfest, with flea markets, the Schwör ceremony and a program presented by local associations; the culinary ESTiVAL; and the Stadt im Fluss cultural festival. Dates for individual events may change, so it is worth checking the latest information. The Esslingen Medieval Market and Christmas Market takes place every year in November and December. Its program includes more than 200 stalls, a torchlight procession to the castle, medieval music in the Minster and a varied cultural program.

Vineyards, Canals and Trails
The steep vineyards of Esslingen, with their old dry-stone walls, are characteristic of the city. Cultivating them remains a particular challenge. The Esslingen Wine Experience Trail runs through this cultivated landscape and offers insights at 26 stops into the history of wine, its cultivation, the work of winegrowers in the steep vineyards, and the area’s nature and geology. The trail offers a different focus from a walk through the old town’s half-timbered streets: here, the landscape and winegrowing take center stage.
Another way to experience Esslingen is to take a canoe trip on its canals, offered by Esslingen City Marketing and Tourism GmbH. Kessler also connects a local product with a historic location: for more than 190 years, the company has produced sparkling wine in a medieval administrative courtyard in the old town. For cyclists, the fifth stage of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route is a clearly defined section: it runs from Esslingen am Neckar to Besigheim and is 59.52 kilometers long. In Esslingen, the cycle route passes through steep vineyards and by a castle that forms the remaining part of the city wall there. This lets you choose between a longer cycling stage and shorter, themed explorations of the city when planning your trip.
Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Apartment
Regional trains stop at Esslingen station; buses serve the central bus station, from which the old town is an easy walk. Esslingen is about 15 minutes from Stuttgart Central Station on S-Bahn line S1. As journey times depend on the current timetable, check your connection before departure. The tourist information office is right on the market square, about a five-minute walk from Esslingen station.
