Church, Half-Timbered Architecture and Local Culture
The Großbettlingen public library is housed in a converted old Neoclassical farmhouse. Around 5,000 items are available to borrow in a cosy half-timbered setting. Its rooms host cosy evenings featuring music, author readings, variety performances, cabaret and exhibitions; the programme may vary. In this way, the history of the building is linked to its present-day use as a library and event venue. Markets in Großbettlingen offer fresh local produce and lovingly crafted arts and crafts. Since 2017, the Forum der Generationen has been a lively meeting place for people of all ages.
Green Spaces, Views and a Literary Connection
Forum Grün was created by transforming the Old Churchyard and the Old Cemetery; the redesigned area was officially opened in June 2016. In a central location in the community, Forum Grün combines a lovely view with a peaceful atmosphere. The creation of this green space is also part of the town’s history. Geigersbühl is the highest point in the community. In Eduard Mörike’s novel “Maler Nolten,” the view from there towards the Alb escarpment is vividly described.

The playground at the forum in Großbettlingen is set in green surroundings and offers space to play, explore and relax. Benches and shaded areas make it a pleasant place for the whole family to spend time. The footbath basin was built in early 2013 in the Pumpstation area of the Stetten district and extensively upgraded in 2015. During the summer months, it offers a refreshing break for young and old alike and is very popular. Großbettlingen is also a starting point for lovely hikes and walks, so a stay can include both peaceful and more active outings.

Six landscape areas shape the wider region of Esslingen District: Schurwald, Schönbuch, Fildern, the Neckar Valley, the Alb foothills and the Alb escarpment. The district’s orchard landscape includes 1.5 million fruit trees and also shapes the scenery. Esslingen District is one of the ten districts in the Swabian Alb UNESCO Global Geopark. The themed trail at the Beuren Open-Air Museum is also part of what the region has to offer: its 18 stops cover natural and cultural landscapes, orchard varieties and cultivated plants. Since 2020, cyclists have had around 1,200 kilometres of district cycling routes to explore, with continuous cycle route signposting throughout the district.
