In 1430, Count Amédée VIII sent two officials to Saint-Julien-Mont-Denis to select on site the slate needed for repairs to Annecy Castle. The last slate quarry in Saint-Julien-Mont-Denis, operated by Raoul Chauvin, closed in 1982.

Trails

The Sentier de la Cochette begins at the hamlet of La Rochelle, a few hundred metres from the church. Depending on the season, a few individual ibex can be observed on the Sentier de la Cochette.

The Circuit des Ardoisiers is an old operational route used for slate mining, carved directly into the rock. It runs along the mountainside on the right bank of the Saint-Julien mountain stream. The return route of the Circuit des Ardoisiers crosses a ridge and offers views of the valley.

The peaks of Pointe du Télégraphe, le Pic du Génie and Tête d'Albiez-le-Vieux are located in the immediate vicinity of Saint-Julien-Mont-Denis. The peak of le Petit Perron is also located near Saint-Julien-Mont-Denis.
