Culture and History
The cultural monuments include Le Prieuré. It was built around 1030 for Cluniac monks and has a cloister with Gothic vaults. The Prieuré is classified as a historic monument, belongs to the network of Cluniac sites and is part of the Council of Europe's major cultural route.
The gardens of the Prieuré were awarded the designation “Jardin Remarquable” in September 2006. They are considered to be of particular historical and botanical significance, are free to access and open year-round. The Église Saint-Laurent contains a polychrome stone rood-screen artwork attributed to the Burgundian school; the church was classified as a historic monument in 1900.
Château Thomas II was built on a plot of land acquired by Thomas II of Savoy in 1248 and is a unique structure in the entire region. It is an important reference point for understanding medieval civil and military architecture. Until the 15th century, it was a country residence of the Counts of Savoy on the shores of Lac du Bourget; later, it became a romantic ruin. Since 2012, its towers have housed a museum displaying the lake's fauna and flora and presenting the protection of natural areas.
Nature
The protected southern shore of Lac du Bourget is a diverse wetland habitat preserved to protect fauna and flora and for the benefit of local residents and visitors. A programme to reintroduce the European pond turtle, a protected freshwater turtle, is underway in the protected area.
The marshes on the southern shore of Lac du Bourget combine aquatic reed beds with forests, wet meadows, ponds and a pool. They therefore provide habitats that are attractive to numerous species. The Observatoire des Aigrettes can be reached via a discovery trail along the castle grounds and is open to the public as part of the “Sorties Nature” programme.
Activities
Seven major hiking trails start from Le Bourget-du-Lac. The Club Nautique Chambéry–Le Bourget-du-Lac offers rowing for beginners through to experienced competitors, as well as courses for children and adults, recreational rowing and outings. Chambéry Le Bourget Canoë Kayak offers canoeing and kayaking on the lake and river, accompanied outings, trips on calm and moving water, and canoe hire.
At Lac du Bourget, visitors can swim, sail, row, wakeboard, take boat trips, use pedal boats and go fishing. The Yacht Club du Bourget-du-Lac offers water sports, courses and individual lessons for children, teenagers and adults, as well as the hire of catamarans, dinghies, windsurf boards, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks; it also offers Handivoile activities for everyone.
The Plage municipale has a water play area supplied with lake water, a large pier with a diving board leading to the swimming area and a beach volleyball court. It can be reached from Chambéry and Aix-les-Bains by road and cycle path and is located near a bus stop served by line 1 and by the Synchro or Chrono A lines.
