Culture

The present-day Saint-Roch church was built in 1872 according to plans by the Lyon architect François Merlin. Its carillon comprises 36 bells, while the square tower was restored in 2004.

The church also houses the baptismal font of Grézieu-la-Varenne: a basin irregularly carved from a single block of stone, with Romanesque decoration, dating from the 10th century. The carillon of Grézieu-la-Varenne plays every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and can be visited during the European Heritage Days in September.

Another aspect of the town's history is presented at the Maison du Blanchisseur-Musée. It is located on a site of almost one hectare, with a completely renovated 19th-century farm and a modern building. Both are dedicated to the history of laundry work as it developed in numerous municipalities in western Lyonnais during the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition presents the various stages of laundry work – from washing beside the “plates” through American washing drums to the advent of household washing machines. The Maison du Blanchisseur-Musée offers educational and guided tours.

Nature and trails

The “Circuit Randoland Grézieu-la-Varenne” is a 6.7 km treasure hunt. The route combines a tour of the village with a walk in nature and links the discovery of the local heritage with a walk in nature.

Over 4.5 km, the Voie Verte follows the route of the former railway line between Lyon Saint-Just and Vaugneray. It is also described as a 4.10 km out-and-back route. The section in Grézieu-la-Varenne begins at the junction of chemin des Ondines and chemin du Michon. The “Circuit VTT 3 – Le tacot” mountain-bike loop partly follows the Voie Verte from Grézieu-la-Varenne.

The walk through the Vallée de l'Yzeron follows the routes of two former railway lines in western Lyonnais.
