Beaujeu’s cultural history includes the Church of Saint-Nicolas and a very old half-timbered house. The church has a Romanesque bell tower with Cluniac influences; its choir is classified as a historic monument. At the same time, it is an example of transitional Cluniac Romanesque-Byzantine architecture. The half-timbered house in Beaujeu is a very old building dating from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments on 15 February 1977.

Culture

The Maison du Terroir Beaujolais offers a lively, playful and pleasure-oriented tour of the Beaujolais terroir in five rooms. It also includes a shop selling products from local producers, Beaujolais wines, regional specialities, local creations and books from a regional bookshop. The Marius-Audin Museum houses almost 10,000 works that bear witness to the history of Beaujeu and the Beaujolais region. The museum presents the core of its collection in a themed exhibition at the Maison du Terroir Beaujolais.

The tour “Beaujeu Chronicles, narrated by Vandalmonde et Guichard” takes visitors back to the time of the Sires de Beaujeu and ends with a tasting in the cellar.

Nature

The route to the Croix de Rochefort reaches its highest point at 888 metres; from the orientation board, there is a panorama of Beaujeu and the surrounding mountains. The Estelle Trail comprises four signposted paths, allowing hikers to put together their own route or walk only part of the full trail.

Activities

The special orienteering experience for children is an 8 km orienteering course for children aged eight and over, with checkpoints and a treasure chest at the end. The Balade des Sires is a family-friendly circular trail with little elevation gain starting from the grounds of Château Saint Jean, where visitors can discover flora and landscapes. The Circuit Site du Château Saint Jean circular trail starts at the town hall car park.

The bicycle rental service at the Maison du Terroir offers hybrid bikes and electrically assisted bicycles for adults, as well as mountain bikes, trailers and child seats for children. The Voie Verte du Beaujolais cycle path runs along the Ardières Valley for more than 15 km between Belleville and Beaujeu. The B3 mountain-bike loop from Beaujeu to Saint-Didier-sur-Beaujeu is 24 km long and starts at the church in Beaujeu.

Food and Events

Les Sarmentelles is a festival lasting several days celebrating Beaujolais Nouveau. The Les Sarmentelles association organises a large festival in the third week of November to promote Beaujolais Nouveau. The programme includes tastings, funfairs, live music, markets, dinners, performances, guided tours and children’s shows as part of the Beaujolais Nouveau celebrations.
