History
The medieval gate of Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue is a pointed-arch remnant of the former fortifications dating from the 14th or 15th century. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue developed into a prosperous village, as the Tracol became a necessary passage for merchants travelling between the Rhône Valley and Le Puy-en-Velay.
The historic townscape also includes 35 crosses erected in the 17th century. The Porte de la Vialle is a remnant of the former priory of the village. The scales of Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue have also preserved their weighing mechanism: they still have two platforms, one on the roadside for weighing carts and their loads of up to 10 tonnes, and one at the rear for weighing livestock, with a capacity of 1 tonne.
Culture
The Sentier des Croix trail passes through the village and follows a route lined with numerous crosses, some of them very old. They are reminders of the religious devotion of the hamlets along the way. The Sentier des Croix circular trail also leads visitors to the Château de Bobigneux.
Nature
The Forêt de Taillard extends across three départements and has belonged to the residents of Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue since 1659. Its core area is designated as a ZNIEFF. The Forêt de Taillard is considered the largest forested area in the Parc naturel régional du Pilat and covers 1,000 hectares of coniferous woodland.
The Forêt de Taillard is home to the Giant of Taillard, a 200-year-old fir tree standing 49 metres tall.
Trails
The GR 65 passes through the Forêt de Taillard. In total, there are 10 kilometres of forest trails that can be covered on foot or as a trail run. The Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue section of the Via Fluvia is 11.1 kilometres long and begins in the Les Chavannes hamlet.
Agriculture
GAEC La Ferme de Taillard is a certified organic family farm that raises pigs and Aubrac cattle. The farm offers explanations of its production methods, product tastings and farm-gate sales.
