Culture
The “Mille ans d’Histoire” tour takes visitors to ten historic sites in Champdieu. The church and priory of Champdieu can be visited as part of self-guided or guided tours. The church is built over a partially underground crypt. A fresco from the mid-15th century depicting the Last Supper can be seen in the priory’s former refectory.
The cultural attractions also include the Centre de l’Art roman en Forez. It houses the permanent exhibition “Moines et bâtisseurs autour de l’An Mil”. Another important building is the Château de Vaugirard: this classical country estate from the early 17th century has slate roofs, small roof turrets and a rammed-earth structure. Its park and garden are open to visitors.
The Château de Vaugirard is partially protected as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture; this partial classification was made on 21 May 1970.
Trails
Three hiking trails start in Champdieu. Information about the trails is available at the car park du Ruillat. The La Madone route is an 8-kilometre hike of moderate difficulty with an elevation gain of around 200 metres.
Nature
The natural area around the basaltic Pic de Purchon includes two botanically particularly species-rich basalt outcrops: the Puy de Griot and the Pic du Purchon. The basaltic dry grasslands of Griot and Purchon are also home to species with a southern distribution, which reach the northern limit of their range here. These include the insect Adscita mannii, which has strong populations there.
Wine
Around Champdieu, dedicated winemakers open their cellars to visitors to share their expertise and introduce local grape varieties, particularly Gamay.
