In Coutouvre, the signposted “Balade des deux chapelles” connects several specific points of interest: The 10.0 km circular hiking trail starts at the car park by the sports hall on Chemin de la Chapelle in Coutouvre, follows the Trambouzan and offers panoramic views as well as bucolic landscapes.
Nature and Trails
At the summit of the Madone Notre-Dame-de-Prompt-Secours, there is an orientation table. After climbing 64 steps, visitors can enjoy a 360° panorama over the Roannais; in clear weather, at least 36 church towers can be seen from the top. The Madone de Prompt-Secours was consecrated in 1875 by Mgr Dubuis, the Bishop of Texas who was born in Coutouvre. The interior of the Madone de Prompt-Secours chapel can be visited.
Those planning a stay in Coutouvre may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
As a shorter loop, the 3.3 km “Balade digestive” runs through the village of Coutouvre.
Culture and History
The Tour de Morland dates back to the 14th century and was originally a hunting meeting place for the Dukes of Burgundy. The Château de la Varenne was a former fief of the Dukes of Burgundy; its two towers date from the 15th century.
The circular trail “Sur les traces de Louis Mercier” pays tribute to Louis Mercier, a novelist and poet born in Coutouvre (1870–1951). At his gravesite in Coutouvre, visitors can see his stele and trompe-l’œil portrait.
The Fresque is a trompe-l’œil on the façade of the post office building in Coutouvre and pays tribute to figures who shaped the history of the village. The grotto in Coutouvre was built in 1958 by entrepreneurs from the municipality with the support of former prisoners and their families.
