The former Canal de Givors was intended to connect the Rhône and Loire; however, only the Givors–Rive-de-Gier section was completed.

The former Canal de Givors was inaugurated in 1781, supplied the Rive-de-Gier coal basin for half a century and was subsequently displaced by the railway.

The cultural heritage of the Canal de Givors in Rive-de-Gier includes the façades and roofs of the town hall, formerly the hotel of the canal company.

History

The Combélibert Shaft was inaugurated in 1780 and originally reached a depth of 80 m.

The Combélibert Shaft is considered a rare and particularly symbolic relic of coal mining in France. Its headframe, dating from 1855, is the older of the two mining relics.

The wooden headframe, engine building and large chimney of the Combélibert Shaft were listed as historic monuments by decree of 25 August 1995.

Events

The Salle Jean Dasté in the centre of Rive-de-Gier has 470 seats and a spacious stage area. Its regular programme includes concerts, theatre and dance performances, as well as other community events.

L’Imprimerie Café-Théâtre offers a varied programme of comedy, music, magic and theatre throughout the year.

The Ciné Chaplin in Rive-de-Gier has three air-conditioned screening rooms, a cultural café and completely renovated reception areas.

The Jardin des Plantes is located in the town centre on the Quai Fleurdelix near the Place de la Libération and regularly hosts events during the warmer months.

Rive-de-Gier is connected by SNCF rail services and the A47 motorway.

Its proximity to the Pilat Regional Nature Park and the coteaux du Jarez makes Rive-de-Gier a starting point for walks in nature, which are very popular with hikers and cyclists.

The town regularly develops new sections of cycle paths and 30 km/h zones; a cycling plan is currently being implemented.
