Culture
The Benedictine Abbey of Charlieu was founded around 875 by Robert, Bishop of Valence, and incorporated into the Abbey of Cluny around 930. Independent visits are possible with an information sheet available in five languages; there is also a regular guided tour covering the history and architecture of the site. The GR765 Way of St. James from Cluny provides access to the Benedictine Abbey of Charlieu.
The Church of Saint-Philibert is open daily. A guided tour of Charlieu’s historic centre includes the Church of Saint-Philibert, Charlieu Town Hall, as well as several characteristic half-timbered houses and houses made from Charlieu’s blond stone.
The former Hôtel-Dieu of Charlieu is partially listed as a Monument historique. The Musée Hospitalier presents the history of the Hôtel-Dieu of Charlieu from 1259 until the hospital closed in 1981. The collection also includes a 19th-century pharmacy from the Musée Hospitalier, which is classified as a Monument historique.
The Musées de Charlieu offer guided tours of all museum areas. The Musée de la Soierie traces the history of silk weaving in Charlieu from the 19th century to the present day; weaving demonstrations are also held there.
The Musées de Charlieu offer participatory workshops for children, families and adults; these include courses for adults to learn weaving. The “Mystère Monastique” tour allows visitors to follow in the footsteps of the monks who shaped the Pays de Charlieu, including Benedictines and Franciscans in Charlieu.
The Musée de la Soierie displays the collections of the Corporation des Tisserands, described as the last of its kind in France. A church in Charlieu contains 24 painted medieval choir-stall backs dating from around 1400; they are described as unique in France and rare in Europe.
Nature and Trails
The Sentier du Bézo is a nature trail in Charlieu. Information panels cover river life, drinking water, biodiversity, flood risks and local history.
Charlieu can be reached from Pouilly-sous-Charlieu via the Véloire, a Greenway built along a former railway line.
Townscape and Local Specialities
The Andouille de Charlieu is part of the local tradition. It is made by members of the Confrérie des faiseurs d’Andouille and can be eaten hot or cold, depending on the season.
